With 51 other open weekends on the calendar, it's a curious decision to run an event that aspires to be similar to NYCC on the exact same weekend, but that is a question that the creators, fans, and publishers will answer...Or already have with 60% of the enlarged NYCC already sold with still 12 months to go. I think this speaks for itself in terms of the support from all corners of the industry.

What happened with what tool where, Denim? I'm confused.

As for Johnston, I want to punch him in the face now more than ever.

I'm guessing Mark is new to the company. He'll figure it out. But yeah, way to plug, sir. We really appreciate it. In a way, I do feel bad for the Wiz. They are going to LOSE this fight in a serious way. Hell, it looks like they may have already lost.

Tell Mark that he shouldn't defend his company for fear of firing. Brian and Jim were the most loyal Wizard employees I ever met and even when it was tough to stand in the front, getting hit by the crap people thrown at Wizard - they were still let go when the opportunity arose. There's no meaning to the word "loyalty" for Gareb and the rest of the executives.

He responded.

If Reed had shown any respect, they would not have shown up to not one but two Wizard cons to hand out their fliers for their con. They did so not as vendors, retailers, or exhibitors, but as people buying tickets. That's unethical on multiple levels.

Really?! Promoting a show that's happening in the same city is playing dirty?

Business is business. Just because some comic fans on a message board want to make it personal does not make it so. In business, there is going to be competition. Wizard and Reed are competing for the convention market. Reed has been playing dirty by walking into Wizard shows and handing out fliers - which, by the way, is a fact that multiple sites will confirm. Wizard shot back by deciding to go head-to-head with them. That's called the free market - if Reed is better, it will win; if Wizard is better, it will win.

Wasn't Wizard trying to deny that fact, that it wasn't personal?

As for being brainwashed or whatever else you want to imply, you clearly have never read any of my posts in any other thread. I will not defend things the company has done or does do that I disagree with. Heck, that's part of the reason they like me - I'm outspoken and will argue my points hard. As for the shows, I won't be working the show in all likelihood but going as a fan, and I might check out both while I am in the city. Guess what? If I do, I don't think Wizard will cut my paycheck.

But, again, please feel free to hate all over Wizard since everything that goes wrong in the world is Wizard's fault, and do so in a forum that Wizard provides free for you to do so...

Oh honey..

Mass amounts of unhappy fans should be a red flag to any company.

This is all just so ridiculous.

You guys still GO THERE? I haven't been there in months!

Catching up to everything, all I gotta say is that when C2E2 blows his cons out of the water, and they will, I saw it in my FlashForward. I can't wait for the C2E2 to say the exact things to him when he's all whiney and pouty. "Hey, business is business." The key to business is to making your customers happy and your employee's happy. In this case....fans. The fans will see the REAL conventions to go to. With all the crap they are reading about Wizard and what they are doing...do you really think they'll go when there's a BETTER convention to go to? Do you really think artists/writers will go to a conventionn where it might hurt their profile name?

Look, if I was just getting into the biz, I'd probably be pretty stoked to be working for Wizard, same as all the other guys they've used, chewed up and spit out these past few years (Myself included. Check this month's issue for 100% less Rodriguez). He'll figure it out once it's too late. Wizard is stuck in a mode where it's like anything past 2001 and the advancement of the industry never happened and they're still the only game in town. At this point, it's a house of cards.

My response:

But, please, feel free to think that Wizard is somehow a bad guy.

Thanks for your permission!

This will be my last reply here, because I really don't want to sit here and listen to 20 people scream at me. Here are the facts, though:

1. You don't call Marvel a--holes when they make you choose between buying X-Men or a DC book.

2. You don't call Sony an a--hole if they release a movie you want to see at the same time as another studio releases a movie you like.

3. You don't call Coke a--holes because they force you to choose between Coke and Pepsi.

That's specious reasoning. You cited examples where people can partake in both. I don't have to choose between Marvel and DC, I can buy both. I don't have to choose between movie studios, because I can see both movies. I don't have to shun Pepsi because I want to drink Coca-cola, I can do both. But when something only happens at one point in time clashes with something else that happens at one point in time, people have to make a decision. But you know what, you're right. I'm not going to call Wizard the bad guy for sabotaging themselves. I'm simply going to go to the convention where the guests appeal to me the most and that clearly won't be Wizard, seeing as how the majority of the industry is not supporting Wizard. Instead of trying to appeal to people and convince them why Wizard has the better convention, you'd rather win a petty internet argument. Way to go!

Heck, that's part of the reason they like me - I'm outspoken and will argue my points hard.

We'll save a seat for you in the "Wizard is a douchebag" section after they lay you off.

I think a lot of people are overlooking one of the key points to Wizard's scheduling announcement - the free advertising.
We've all talked about Big Apple 2010 more in the last 72 hours on here, CBR, Newsarama, etc than we likely would have in the next 12 months combined. Do I think it's a horrendously bad decision on Wizard's part, absolutely. Tactics like that are employed in times of desperation; it's the hail mary pass of the business world. But I have little doubt that if Wizard can get people talking about Big Apple 2010, even if it's in a negative light, they'll consider it a win because at least people are talking about it at all.

That strategy is inherently flawed of course. You're trading a long-term loss (lack of attendance) for short-term gains (hey people are talking about our con. yippe!. But again, desperate times call for desperate measures I guess.

If Wizard were my company, I'd change the name from Big Apple Comic Con to Big Apple PopCulture Con or something. It's clear by now that they're gravitating away from comics as the focus of the con and stearing it towards an amalgamated pop culture stew. Mark intimated as much with his comments on the WUMB board about theirs being a more "diversified show" and geared towards the budget concious.

Change the name, seperate yourself a bit, and their attendance could actually increase with people from the non-comics sector who want a sports/wresting/actors meet-and-greet con.

If Reed were my company, I'd offer free admission Sunday afternoon from, say 2PM until close, for anyone with a Big Apple ticket. If Wizard is that unconcerned with the competition, as Garab has stated in several interviews, it shouldn't be worried about people walking over to the competition and checking them out.

As much as I love word getting out about PoP!, I would NOT want this kind of publicity, free or not, lemme tell you. I don't like it when the handful of WUMB haters talk smack. If the ENTIRE community was bagging on us, I'd lose my mind.
