Anybody hear about this. I heard it awhile back, but now that it'll be here in a couple months and hasn't been mentioned here, thought we could chat about it.

I guess the first question should be: Do you care?

"At its Source blog, DC Comics has announced that in September, it will launch a new, ongoing Magog series, starring the DCU's version of the Kingdom Come villain.

The series will be written by Keith Giffen, with art by Howard Porter and John Dell.

The Magog of the DC Universe is Lance Corporal David Reid, a new member of the Justice Society who was granted the powers of Magog when he was resurrected by the the alien god Gog, who also replaced his missing arm with a golden facsimile which incorporates his plasma-based weapon. Reid turned against Gog in the storyline, but kept the "gifts" the alien gave to him."

Here's a little extra below.

I'll be picking up although I never got to into the character. I could see this biting the dust, but I'll go with it when it is available.

I'm just not interested in the character and I don't understand why this character deserves his own title.

Curiosity got the better of me and I picked up the first issue. I really enjoyed it and I look forward to getting more issues. My only complaint is that Porter doesn't do the covers.

I'm just not interested. I've been reading him in JSA and I have no interest in the character and from what I understand, he'll not only be in the second JSA series which I believe is being called JSA All-Stars, but he'll be a leader of sorts of this new splinter team. So, how did this character become so needing of his own series as well as being featured in a team book? I just don't get it.

I'm only interested because of his his existence in the Kingdom Come universe and the issues he posed there.

I think they might be pushing him to fast in order to push the Kingdom Come future. It seems to hurried.

This.

Giffen only works for me in a JLI setting and Magog is one of the worst designed characters ever. I know it was on purpose, but seriously... They couldn't give him something better since he's a normal DCU character now and let that awful outfit remain in the future? shake my head

I'm interested in seeing how he took control of this new JSA group away from Power Girl. I thought she was getting a solid push towards being one of DC's heavy hitters? Now they've got her playing second-in-command to this unproven (in DCU and real world) new guy? Does anyone even like this character? Laughing

I don't which is why I won't support this book. I hope it crashes and burns big time.

I understand not caring about a book, but I don't understand why anyone would be filled with so much spite that you'd wish the book complete failure. Some of us may actually enjoy reading it. I don't see how it existing is so offensive that you'd prefer it to be canceled rather than just ignoring it.

Exactly. It is showing the divergence from the that future, yet showing that it is still somewhat possible. They've been doing that all over, though. It is just that Magog is a focal point for that future.

Ah, just ignore 'em, Josh. They haven't read it, and they won't even give it a chance.

Just finished it a couple minutes ago and it was a pretty amazing read. You understand the character, you get his mentality, and it pulls truths from that universe that haven't really been talked about too much. Like heroes helping out other worlds, but not other nations. His "buddy" Axel is pretty likeable. His background could open up to interesting things. (Also, when Magog first went into his gas-station/HQ, the car/car accessories posters inside read all the names to Marvel writers. Keith Giffen's humor seeps through the background, even in this serious-toned title.)

Because it pisses me off that characters like Magog who really isn't deserving of his own title gets his own series while much more deserving ones play second fiddle in backup stories instead of their own title.

^ Well, it shouldn't. Writers and comic-teams show their ideas and, which ever gets the most nods, gets the go-ahead. They're given paper and ink for a reason. It isn't a random thing. If other characters are seemingly given bad ideas, then they're less likely to be given a chance. But something like Kingdom Come and the success of JSA, Magog is better likely to be given a chance than Aquaman, who failed with readers a good few times.

Fun read. Again. Pretty solid. Love Hector Hammond in this. Maybe it is the source of the "zombies." The way he looks at the JSA is pretty funny. Such a cynical pov he has.

Doing some research, due to Hammond's statements, led me to find out different variations in mythologies about Gog and Magog. They're both in many religions, and in some Celtic beliefs, he is the original Irishman, his children are the Irish of then and now. Thought that was cool.

I just don't get how this piece of crap character get's a push. Did Magog really need his own book? Do we even really need Magog? And how the hell does he become the leader of the new JSA team and not Power Girl, who WAS the leader?

^ He seems to be taking the initiative. If you remember, she agreed with him more than her to him. Magog is a character of interest. The guy is a foreshadowing. Along with his actions, which are fantastic. He's a hero that goes into wars, unlike other heroes who absolve themselves from such touchy subjects. I'm actually really liking the title. He actually grew on me in the first issue compared to him being the designated prick of JSA, which is how he's still written but in a way that makes you understand the character. I might be like that too if I had a passion to stop the real problems and not wait for a giant robot or silly man in a costume to rob a bank.

Don't rip on it until you've given the series a try, Brodie. I'd at least give the first ish a chance. It is only on the 2nd.

Well after issue #3 I'm dropping this book. I'm not finding the character that interesting but the main reason is that Giffen's overwhelming Magog narrative is annoying the shit out of me and I can't stand it anymore. Mad

Additionally, I have to say the villains he's come up with for the opening arc are pretty weak and uninspired.

Pretty good so far, with the current issue #3. Magog is developing well as a character.

Magog's momma, Alba, is introduced. Celtic goddess that I couldn't quite find any info on other than that titling at the beginning of this sentence. Seems Giffen is giving us readers a play by play of Magog's capabilities. He isn't as powerful as he was when he was fused to Gog, sort of like Silver Surfer for the longest time when he wasn't fused to Galactus. Getting interesting.
