Pretty good for a book that was mostly set-up. I am interested to see where Robinson is going to take this.

Yeah, I fell for the Super-hype before when Busiek & Johns were in charge and it didn't really do much for me. Who knew the way to fix the Superman books was to get rid of Superman? Laughing

I do find it interesting that the most excited I have been about Batman and Superman is when the titular characters have been removed.

Superman #693

I get the feeling these books are just better read in trade. We don't always get the "oh wow" splash pages or shattering revelations like we did with the New Krypton, Vol. 2 arc; as this along with Action and Supergirl remind me more of the first volume of NK with lots of important measures building to a bigger bang. The problem with these current series is that it's more of the same. Robinson and Rucka were getting outstanding reviews when the World Without Supes first started and even after the Codename: Patriot crossover. Now, it's as if things are happening twice, or just not happening, or not happening as importantly. I still find myself enjoying the arc as a whole and entertained by the issues; they're just not as important as they were or are going to be.

Action Comics #881 & Supergirl #45

I found this to be a lot better than some reviews had intended...the whole arc ended up being pretty satisfactory, but only works as a whole if you read the arc/trade "New Krypton, Vol. 2" with the death of Kara's father. I actually enjoy the Captain Atom backup, and I think the art is fantastic. Speaking of art, Jamal Igle's art is superb in Supergirl #45, the 2nd chapter of this saga. The problem with that book is not a whole lot happens other than Lois getting mad, and Kara and Thara bickering non-stop. Metallo is set up for something special though.

3.5/5 & 3/5 Bags&Boards - Worth Buying & Standard Fare, respectively

Action Comics #882 & Supergirl #46

This issue of Action is what really makes buying the whole arc worth it. I had read these middling reviews for Hunt of Reactron 'til word was that this issue was a definite highlight of this whole WWSupes status quo. The third part of the arc contains the much-anticipated brawl between Metallo and the Metropoli3, pushing all the other subplots to the brink, while giving us a glimpse of what the hell's going on with Lana Lang. The backup feature thankfully picks up the pace as well with some surprises in store. Supergirl #46, the conclusion, keeps up with the fantastic Igle art. Lots of huge, bright images that depict elevated powers and near-death take the majority of pencils here. The ending is highly enjoyable, pushing the conclusion to an epilogue for the next Supergirl and adding heavy weight to an impending war between fellow kryptonians and evil earthlings.

Eh I was loving this book till like the last couple issues. This issue just seems like more filler with the Saturnians out-of-nowhere and oddly executed appearance, then the weirdly quick resolution to the Thanagarian issue. And now with the last page it seems like there will be more filler. In final few issues I hope they get back to focusing more on Supes, Zod, and the Guild situation. There was a little of that here but it should be the main focus. I'm still excited about the big Supes story they seem to be building to though.

The review format on this site already blows, mind as well make it worse by lumping every book together and just pissing everyone the hell off. Let's face it: we can't wait for WUMB to come back. In PoP's defense, these books are definitely interchangable these days with more or less the same writers on the stories and the status quo of "Wold Against Superman" covering all books. It's not that hard to follow if you use bold titles before reviewing, or quoting each other's replies.

Thank you. This was a very solid review. I liked the book but I actually thought Pete Woods' level of art on this particular issue dropped immensely. It looked very rushed, very sloppy and no where near as detailed. The story is heading into the right direction, but it seems Rucka & Robinson are definitely dragging this whole series out with the pointless (aforementioned, Bigtymin) Saturanians and Thanagarian crap? I, too, still like where this maxi is going.

I dont think the appearance by the Thanagarians and Saturians were pointless at all. I think it's building to a galactic confrontation between New Krypton and the rest of the galaxy. These are the seeds of that confrontation. And when the inevitable war between Earth and New Krypton erupts, perhaps it'll be the help received by these other races that Earth is able to defend itself against 100,000 Kryptonians.

It does seem alittle slow at the moment, but looking down the line I can see a massive intergalactic war brewing.

Good point. Just didn't make for an interesting read. Guardians of the Galaxy is an example of a book that "plants seeds" while keeping the current material interesting.

Uh oh, there I go with my Marvel vs. DC crap again!

Yeah I see the potential in what they're trying, its just been very poorly executed IMO. Just doesn't seem realistically consequential and seems to come out of nowhere, and resolved way too quickly. I get that they're probably planting seeds (it can't just be random appearances) but they're not doing it in a way that will make it interesting down the road IMO. Then the last page didn't excite me either. I guess the length of this series has just stretched the story out a little thin for me. Still solid, but not as great as the first half was.

I dont see how it came out of nowhere. I mean, if you start rearranging the galaxy I'm sure someone is bound to notice Wink

And yeah, it did seem to get resolved quickly, but like you said if it seems like things are dragging then it's probably good it didnt take long

Out of nowhere meaning I thought it wasn't adequately set up within the issue. They've kinda been jumping from one thing to the next the last couple issues, and now with Adam Strange it seems like next issue will follow the same track. I just think if they're gonna use those concepts then they should develop them a little better so they're worth it, because they've taken focus off of other interesting plot threads dealing with Supes/Zod, the Guilds, etc. Still looking forward to whats coming though. Smile

Me too! I check out solicits (mostly just for the purty covers) but avoid spoilers, so I'm just about in the same boat you are on this. Should be veeery interesting to see how things unfold.

I wasn't thrilled with this issue. The opening made me shake my head. It seemed like a bonehead move on Jemm's part. In any case, I hope whatever they're planning moves forward. This has the feel of an event yet it's not being billed as one. I feel DC has alot to gain and little to lose if they truly hyped this little storyline up.

Meh. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. I did like it better than the last issue (which I kinda hated), but it still wasn't great. The first half was kinda boring, but once it got to the Kal/Zod stuff I started to like it. I like the military aspect of it, and I like the stuff going on on New Krypton, but seeing the Kryptonians interact with the Thanagarians and the Saturnians just didn't interest me too much.
