Hey, the X-men have much more substance than a group of key players, and 3 temporary groups of b-listers.

It was good to have Dodson back, the art was really crisp and clean. The issue was pretty cool overall, getting a look inside Emma's head for once. We finally got some resolution to the Void sliver in her head...but now its transferred to Scott. I wonder what it wants with him. Then Magneto joining the X-science squad was pretty funny too. I think that might be the last straw for Beast though. He's pretty fed up with Scott, and he didn't say it till now but he's really mad that Scott waited to save him from Norman's torture. Judging by next issue's cover, Beast might be packin his bags...

Meh. I really think Fraction need to leave this book. He just isn't cut out for it. This issue wasn't horrible, but it wasn't that great either. It was kinda boring. At least Greg Land wasn't on it.

I don't like how Fraction writes Beast. He sounds off (almost British). If he leaves the team/book I'll be pissed. He's my favorite X-Man.

Other than the uncharacteristic dialogue between Iceman and Beast, #518 is Fraction's best written issue of Uncanny yet. It's easy to see that Fract's taking notes from his own Iron Man series in writing Cyclops and Emma's struggles within the Void. The gorgeous Matrix-like entry into the mind of Emma is actually quite believable--in the dreamy mutant world of X-Men, of course--and it's awesome to see the Dodson's back with their magic.

Why they aren't the full-time Uncanny artists beats me, other than the fact this series runs twice a month. Greg Land's improving, but this is next-level stuff. The art's still cartoony enough to give us the over-the-top 90's feel we love about our Uncanny team; still, descriptive enough in all forms of emotions and environments without the tracing.

In all, there's a lot to love about this issue, if you forgive some hiccups that be Magneto's stumbling and the aforementioned Beast's British-speaking self (ha?). The science team especially stands out. It's taken nearly 20 issues for Fraction to find himself within this run, so let's hope this improvement doesn't sputter.

3.5/5 Bags&Boards - Really good issue, would be an easy 4-4.5 if not for some shaky characterization

What I liked most about these last two issues was that Fraction has realized the intro bubbles were utterly lame and he seemed to not use them at all. That made it so much more enjoyable. I'm enjoying the story, but I can't wait for the timelines from all the X-books to line up. This has to take place before Necrosha, but also after the legacy story i'm thinking.

I loved the last issue, you finally see where all of that Void in Emma stuff was going, plus now you have to wonder:

Spoiler:

I have to admit, Fraction's got me interested again, and yeah, the intro bubbles being gone was a nice bonus.

Still waiting on Uncanny X-Men to be great the whole way around. This month we get the Dodsons back on pencils and coloring, which means the book looks as great as promised. The cartoony-yet-functional portrayal of the X-Men looks as wonderfully fluid as any facial expressions and bodily movements can be.

Fraction, despite his keen sense for plotting, has been up and down with his characterizations and pacing. There's no urgency among the X-Team and others with the fact that Utopia is sinking. They're describing it, debating it, without any sense to run for the hills like that of the hit series Lost. I mean, if these characters are supposed to be 10x as intelligent as anyone else, aren't they going to do something about it?

Don't get me wrong, there are several highlights to enjoy. As said with the art, the layouts of the void stuck in Cyclops with the help of Emma is spectacular, without being too distracting. Namor and Magneto confront and compromise and it's a moment that can be cherished--despite some questionable dialogue (again). Other moments like the reasoning of the Predator X's and the fallout of the Beast are done fairly well. I'm assuming this leave allows Beast to become fully-enthralled into S.W.O.R.D., but I'm not following that series so I have no idea.

Another quality issue of Uncanny, I'm just waiting and wondering if we'll ever get a barnburner. That's all.

3.5/5 - Strong issue with some pretty nice art.

Solid issue wrapping up the whole Void thing. It was a good way to show how strong Scott's psyche is right now. I liked the line "You know how hard it is to be a teenage boy and be with a girl that can read your mind? You're gonna have to do better than that." I'm a sucker for Jeannie references lol. Then there were a lot of other interesting developments like Magneto and Namor developing a partnership of sorts, the nanobots revelation, Fantomex returning, and of course Beast leaving the team. Beast really looks fed up with the X-Men's direction under Scott...I wonder if he will be joining S.W.O.R.D. full time now.

Meh. Not horrible, but not great either. Fraction has been on this book long enough that he should have his a stride, but it's still a roller coaster ride in terms of quality. I think they need a new writer.

I'm an NOT happy that Beast is gone for now. He's my favorite X-Man.

At least Land didn't do the art this issue.

That person's death is one of the major reasons I quit collecting a majority of Marvel titles to begin with.

And has it really been long time?

At the Marilyn Manson board, it was pointed out that this issue had a Manson reference and it did, Wolverine & The Spooky Kids was a joke at Marilyn Manson & The Spooky Kids (he shorted the band name in 1992.

Does Fraction like Manson? Because only usually only a fan would know that Smile

Really? Out of all the bullshit deaths in comics, this one was your last straw? It was one of the best, most touching ones of the decade if you ask me. And it was more of a "sacrifice" than a "death" really. Was it just that you were a huge fan of the character or did you not like how it was done?

Ha not a huge fan so didn't realize that (but still found it funny cuz they are spooky lol), but I'm sure it was a conscious reference by Frac. lol

It's a combination of all of those things. I love the character and I followed her from X-book to X-book when I wasn't able to pick up all of them during the height of my X-Men love. I didn't like the fact that her "death" was spoiled in Uncanny X-Men because Whedon and Cassaday where way late in delivering Giant Size Astonishing X-Men. I don't have a problem with how it happened, I suppose that in retrospect it may even have been forshadowed. It was among the best, and so that may have played into my decision to stop buying. It seemed like the perfect time to leave.

Now she's back and they're playing it off like she's been gone for 10 years or something. It all happened in July 2008. A nice, quick turnaround that proves Marvel is not really into changing the status quo too much or for too long, which as I get older is something I enjoy from my comics.

And wow, I didn't mean to write that much. Sorry if it annoys anyone. Wink

Seriously though, I don't care much for what he has done or the way he seems to try to hard and force dialog. I'm just glad there have been decent plots going on. I thought the Emplate stuff was over way too soon, but I think he was under orders as were all the other X-writers to try and get everything to come together.

It was okay. I dind't care for some of the story but was glad to see that they are using this opportunity to flesh out characters. It is still refreshing to see other artist and writers takes on my favorite characters.

The funniest thing is jubilee who is all but 18-22 is telling "well back in my day" stories.

This issue was easily one of the best Utopia-related issues so far. I really liked the part with Scott and Magneto butting heads. Magneto seems to genuinely want to earn their trust, but the fact that he went behind Scott's back and fixed the sinking problem just looks suspicious. I wonder what Magnus will do during the upcoming Second Coming. I also really liked the Wolverine, Psylocke, and Colossus teamup...with guest star Fantomex. I'm glad they're bringing him back in the mix, he's an interesting character. Also, Greg Land's art was actually really good for the most part this issue. There were no instances that took me out the story like there usually are. Overall great issue with a lot going on that moved the story forward nicely.

Yes, the best Nation X book yet. Matt Fraction did a great (not a typo) job with the script and actually got Magneto to sound like...Magneto. There weren't as many FRACTured plot threads as usual, this time only focusing on the two most important. This brought a little more cohesion to what's dubbed as a pretty important event with Nation X. Greg Land's art...is improving. There are actually some really nice panels in this book. Unfortunately, those traced grins are still there and I refuse to accept this level of artwork on one of Marvel's mainstay titles.

3.5/5 - Best Nation X book yet. Fantomex!

This was okay. I didn't hate it, but I'm not jumping for joy. I really really think a new writer is needed. Fraction, even when he does a fair job just doesn't seem cut out for this book.

I HATED the art. Land should not be on any book. If he must work let him do covers. My biggest problem with the art this issue was actually Wolverine's mask. The ear things looked ridiculous!

Another Deadpool variant. "My chakra is bigger than yours" It opens with Scott and Emma on some Mountain soutside of San Fran trying to figure out what Magneto was doing up there meditating for a day. He is un responsive and Emma cant interupt him, they claim he is keeping her out. My first thought was...uh Fraction isn't that what his helmet has always done.

While this is going on the other team consisting of Wolverine, Psylock and Colusus are still hunting down the people that sent the predators to get them. They are aided by Fantomex who later calls himself and X-man which wolvie chides him about. But we find out that the Predetors where actually there on multiple missions and that the people responsible were mutates that gained access to powers artificially and used the nanomites that where in the predators to gather information on all the X-men. The design a super flue for mutants. then we find out that
Spoiler:

We cut back to magneto and the X-nerd club and find out that Magneto is.

Spoiler:

I enjoyed the issue and hope to see more of Fantomex, Eva, and .... well if you read this you know.
