Deadpool Team-Up #898
I'm thinking of dropping this series. The writing change each month is going to kill this. Why? There's no continuity between issues. There's no rhyme or reason as to why certain heroes/villains are teaming-up with 'Pool other than that these are characters "owned" by their writers. Mike Benson is proof of this. His Zapata Brothers are Mexican luchadore mercenaries that, as humorous guns for hire, would appear to be the perfect mash-up for 'Pool. Actually, they steal the spotlight. It's good to see D-listers get this type of shine, but for more reasons than just being favorites of Benson. The book needs to center around Deadpool with the Brothers clearly sporting the supporting role.
With a thankless story, there's nothing too redeeming in this issue. In these days of comics for $3 or 4 bucks, we're going to want our one-and-done stories with at least some sort of fulfillment (see the current Brave & The Bold). A few slaphappy jokes, some odd missions and gutteral violence just doesn't add up. Am I taking this too seriously? I wouldn't if it had many more laugh-out-loud moments, then it could be accepted as a perfectly funny standalone. Unfortunately, it's just standard Deadpool, and without the right writer to capture Pool's voice(s) month-to-month (like Kelly or even Van Lente), this team-up concept just loses it's pacing.
2.5/5 Slingshot Suplexes - Beautiful art, not much else
