That last page! Shocked

This was a crazy issue with a ton of stuff going down. I loved seeing Red Skull visit Doom in Latveria, I think their interaction was really well done. Bru did a great job on both their voices...Red Skull's naturally domineering tone (lousy Nazi) and Doom's noble arrogance. I liked that it seemed like even Doom was a bit repulsed by Red Skull, the guy is hopelessly unlikeable even by other villains' standards it seems lol. And I love the fact that everything is coming to a head in the Marvel Universe with Doom right in the center of it all!

Then it was great to see Reed and Hank working out all the crazy science behind what's happening with Steve, we got a lot more insight on how everything happened and how he will be brought back, and I think Bru is doing it in an interesting way. Then we saw Vision relay the message Cap sent from the timestream, I wonder why we didn't get to hear exactly what it said, but it seemed to put a lot of pieces together for Reed. Good thing they have that sample of Sharon's blood. Wink

Oh and the scene with Bucky, Natasha, and Clint ambushing those guys was awesome! I hope Clint goes back to using the bow and arrow as Hawkeye full time when this is all said and done. Oh and can't forget Bryan Hitch's art, which was fantastic yet again. His pencils with Butch Guice's inks really give the story a huge cinematic scope. Overall, outstanding issue IMO. Bru really kicked things into high gear, the next 2 issues (yes its 2 now) are gonna be insane...

You just read my mind, man. Ageed 100%- This issue was just AWESOME to the max. Even though I own the singles, I may rebuy the hardcover version because this is just one of those books.

Loved it.

The Red Skull/Doom stuff was fantastic. Brubaker's Doom is spot on.

Loved Black Widow, Bucky, and Clint's ambush. I love Bucky as Cap. I'm hoping he stays in costume for a long time.

Hitch's art was great, just great. I LOVED the pic of Steve slamming his feet into that guys face. Perfect!

That last page was a doozy. I can't wait to see where this is going.

So, this is 6 issues now? Cool.

This was just an all around solid comic. So many good things about it. In all honestly I wish they had stuck with just the 5 issue mini because I hate buying $3.99 comics, but I really can't be all that mad because this is so good.

Incredible. There were a few skeptics--perhaps more than a few--after the first issue was a mere recap and the 2nd issue used the whole Lost-inspireed "stuck in time" plotlines. Now that Reborn has developed into a Bru's Cap-meets Dark Reign--meets Golden Age Cap--meets Seige type book, all those little methods and reflections are forgotten. Why? Because the characterization of everyone from Reed to Doom to Red Skull to the old/stuck Cap are just fantastic, the art has been pretty flawless, and the mystery still surrounds the focal point.

We STILL don't know for sure--even with solicits and all--whether Steve is returning as the SOLE Captain America or not, and with 2 issues left (after how slow the last arc went for Cap, these issues all seem like 4), there's tons left to go. And Brubaker's not done. This will go down--as if it hasn't already--the definitive run in Captain America history and how this all ties into the Seige should make things even more intriguing.

I wasn't so shocked with the last page because I always felt that was the Red Skull's plan. I even think it was pretty evident back in the issues of Captain America when the Skull was originally going to do this switch. I really like that it was all there for us to see from way back then. However, it is shocking that it's actually happened.

Regarding Steve's message via the Vision - my memory may be a bit sketchy but didn't we see Steve deliver the message? If that's the case then they didn't need to show it again.

I've got a feeling when Osborn is brought down Clint will be going back to being Hawkeye again. Hopefully very soon!

Got to agree with everyone about the art. Hitch is doing wonderful work here which beats the mediocre stuff he seemed to be doing on FF (and I suspect that FF work was probably impacted by this book).

Ah okay then there must be a reason Brubaker's being a bit mysterious about it.

Captain America: Reborn #5

Another great issue, this time with non-stop action! I loved the beginning sequence with the Nazi Times Square...makes you wonder how things would have been around here had WWII ended differently lol. Then it was just creepy to see Cap's body inhabited by that nutcase Red Skull. With his plans to meet the President, it seems like he wanted to live out his life as Cap. I guess that's what Skull has wanted all along, to be Cap. Hmh, kind of ironic. Looks like Steve is fighting back though...

Then the fight scenes with Bucky, Widow, Clint, Pym, and company against the MODOK army were just crazy. I like the fact that it ended up in Washington DC too. Watching Bucky Cap fight Skull Cap at the feet of Abraham Lincoln is just damn cool. That ending with Skull Cap about to kill Buck was really intense...my prediction is Pym makes the save somehow.

Overall, Bru has done a great job with this book so far, its a shame Hitch has kinda thrown the schedule off a bit. Still, the art does look great so can't complain.

I thought this was okay. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I think I'm just ready for whatever the new Cap status quo will be. Also, I think the fact that I read GLC #43, which was beyond kick ass, right before reading this made me like this less.

I'm also just not feeling Hitch's art. I LOVED his art on Ultimates 1 and two, but here I don't know it feels off. Maybe because I think of him drawing the definitive Ultimate Cap and seeing him draw regular Cap is weird.

3.5/5 - Disappointing mainly because of the whole "lost it's thunder" aspect due to the past 2 weeks spoilers. Still very intriguing in terms of story and battle. The art was either very good or very sloppy depending on which page you looked at. Liking the supporting players in the book, esp. Pym and Bucky. Don't understand why "Who Will Weild the Shield/S.H.I.E.L.D.?" comes out next week before Reborn #6 even drops. None of this makes sense. Highly entertaining, nonetheless.

Unfortunately the extra #6 issue that Hitch needed threw off the schedule with Who Will Wield the Shield, and they couldn't change it...this according to Tom Brevoort himself.

I like Hitch, but I wish Steve Epting was on this book from the get go. I love his art and everything would have been on time. But he's on The Marvels Project, which has been stellar, so oh well.

I too wish that Epting was drawing this book. I like Hitch, but Epting's Cap is just beyond amazing. I think of his art when I think of Brubaker's Cap run. He just fits so well with the book.

I don't think that Hitch should be on any big or important book. He isn't good with keeping things on schedule, and for big books like this or FF it is really noticeable when they are late.

This wasn't a bad issue but I'm somewhat deflated with this series now with the spoilers that have been appearing in different books. One thing I do like is the feeling of inevitability when it comes to the Red Skull's failure. Steve even says it himself. The Skull will fail, he always does.

Bigtymin504 wrote:Captain America: Reborn #5

Yeah I liked that too. I was thinking at the time - "what a place to crash your quinjet!".

I'm completely with you on Hitch's art. I've only just recently read the first Ultimates and the art on that was stellar. This particular issue I'm starting to see some of the poor work that was evident on his FF run and I suspect it's got something to do with having to work faster (just an assumption of course). Some of it looks great, some doesn't. It's a bit of a mixed bag.

Batman25JM wrote:

Agree with the Epting sentiments. To me, it just would have seemed right for him to be doing this as he's been such a big part of Cap over the last few years. However, as has been said he is doing a brilliant job on the Marvels Project.

I don't have an issue with Hitch on important books but only when the timing of those books isn't important. Same goes for JG Jones and Ethan Van Sciver.

Yeah, that seems fair. It's just, I don' like late books. It annoys me. I'd much rather have someone who isn't good with deadlines work on a mini/limited that wasn't exactly central to a main story and have them get the entire thing done before the first issue shipped.

Captain America: Who Will Wield The Shield?

Being a huge Cap fan, I was just so excited the whole time reading this lol. I know the schedule between this and Reborn #6 has been thrown off, but still this issue was just pure awesome. Seeing Cap back with Sharon after all they've been through throughout Brubaker's run was just great to see. Then I loved the interaction with Bucky, Natasha, and Luke. Bucky has so much respect for Steve that he's ready to immediately relinquish the mantle of Captain America. But Natasha thinks he deserves to at least share the mantle with Steve...and at this point it seems like Steve agrees with her. It really looks like Steve wants to step aside for awhile and let Bucky take over, but we'll see what happens down the road.

I also really loved the end with Cap and the President. It's cool to see Cap get a full Presidential pardon for his role in Civil War. Just shows the amount of respect he has for Cap. It looks like the only way Steve will become Captain America again is if the Prez asks him to serve, but beyond that he might just decide to take some time off later on...
