Hi everyone,

Like we mentioned last year (heh), we'll be having Tom Brevoort on for a bit in the upcoming weeks to talk about the Siege and some of the other major happenings going on at the House of Ideas. If you've got a question, post it here and we'll get as many of them answered as we can in the allotted time.

Recently while traveling I met a soldier returning from overseas and he spotted me reading comics. He struck up a conversation with me about comics and showed me a comic book designed specifically for people serving in the military. It was a Marvel comic book, which impressed the hell out of me because I asked him if he knew of any publishers that did something similar. He said he'd never seen anything but Marvel. I asked him if he ever read the comics they received and was disappointed that he said they're not usually very good and they try a little too hard to be "rah-rah military boosting" stories. Case in point, the comic he was showing me had the Hulk fighting alongside the U.S. Army. The one soldier I spoke to felt like the comic was really dumbed down and kind of condescended to military personnel.

My question is this: while I think it's extremely awesome that Marvel donates comics to the military, why not donate the same stories that you ordinarily charge consumers for? It seems like it'd be a great way to hook a new reader by giving the soldiers a quality story to read, rather than something by writers and artists no one has heard of. Maybe there is something in the business side of things I don't understand, but it seems like 1.) a missed opportunity to gain new readers and 2.) insulting to our serving men and women.

Marvel has been giving their digital comics a big push. Do you (Tom) see a time where everyone will get their comics digitally? or do you see them co-exsisting with the print books?

Do you think the rise of digital comics will lead to the decline of the direct market?

The rumor mill has it a flood of exclusive contracts are on the horizon for the industry. What goes into the decision making process of signing someone exclusive? In what ways do these signings offer the industry, positively or negatively?

Recently, Marvel E-i-C Joe Quesada stated the publisher will ease up on event-based spanning stories. What are your thoughts on events, specifically so-called event fatigue?

As has been mentioned numerous times on the PoPcast about Tigra's high levels of fertility so as she's the major driving force behind the Avengers Resistance team I was wondering when she's due with her Skrittens or if it was going to be part of a big event?

For anyone not already aware, Marvel today announced the end of the Avengers in April. What does this mean? This means I think we know what we'll be talking to Tom Brevoort about!

That is big news..but it makes sense.

As evident from his Twitter account and the ruckus he cause at least once a week, Brevoort loves to talk.

Hey there, Tom. The Avengers line has been shaping the Marvel Universe for a longtime now, and its been great, but will we see other aspects of the Marvel Universe like the X-Men and Cosmic Marvel taking center stage and shaping the overall direction of the MU more? I would love to see The Heroic Age bring about more overlapping of these different sections of the MU, possibly another X-Man joining the Avengers *cough*Beast/Kitty*cough*. And particularly the Cosmic Marvel line, will we see Earth's heroes finally turn their attention to what's been going on beyond Earth in the cosmos?

What are his thoughts on how the reader experience will improve as Marvel backs away from the "event" structure?

Also - better beard? Busiek, Perez, or Brevoort?

Hey Tom, so what the heck does H.A.M.M.E.R. stand for?? Osborn told Hand to "get on that" for him, but apparently she hasn't. Are you guys just waiting to reveal that because its a significant plot point? Or is it just insignificant and something that you will eventually mention in passing? Or will we never know what it stood for?

Indeed, Mattbat. The interview is featured in Popcast Episode 38, available here: http://panelsonpages.com/?p=17990 and the interview itself will be transcribed and available as a separate audio download by midday tomorrow, if all goes according to plan.

I really appreciate you guys asking my question and I never thought about an outside contractor doing the book, but I still don't understand why Marvel doesn't just send one of their A-list comic books. Tom's response was, "Well, no one wants a book that is anti military,", but I don't understand why the book even had to feature the military to begin with. Now again, like he said, maybe this is something the Army commissioned and they had specific guidelines to follow, but it seems to me that Marvel is missing an opportunity to send quality material and hooking new readers, rather than turning people off of comics because they're written with the maturity of a five-year-old. Too many people already think comics are for kids, no need to keep perpetuating that myth with watered-down crap.

Thanks for asking my questions too guys! I really hope that Cosmic Marvel becomes more integrated with Marvel Earth soon. Really interested in who Brevoort is talking about when he says "one or two characters will take a central role" and what kind of event causes them to show up on Marvel Earth more.

And I can't believe we won't find out what H.A.M.M.E.R. stands for lol. But great point (whoever made it) about the USA PATRIOT Act. Makes total sense for Osborn to do something like that. Plus, it was really interesting to find out the background behind it during Civil War. Had no idea they were thinking about an organization called HAMMER led by someone named Blake to get the Thor rumors swirling. Its crazy how these ideas are originally conceived and molded overtime. I've actually got one of the comics made for the military. It's an avengers story and it is indeed pretty awful and cheesy. From what I've gathered, Marvel does regularly send books and stuff to the troops (as does DC). These things are just made specifically FOR them. I, too, never thought about the potential for a commissioned piece, and just sort of assumed it sucked for no real reason. It's good to know that wasn't exactly the case.
