Looking at old covers of Batman, I've noticed that he always lets Robin get into situations first.

Sometimes, to distract so that he can attack from behind. shake my head

alot of those times Bats warned Robin not to rush in, and what does he do? he rushes in.

But, i suppose you gotta do whatcha gotta do, and if that means sending a nine year old in to take some lumps from some twenty to thirty goons who are anywhere from twenty to forty years old, then you do it.

When fighting crime and your kid sidekick doesn't listen to you very often, then it probably is best not to let him fight crime until he gets that into his brightly-colored head. Heh.

Can't argue with old time Batman's methods - dress a little kid up in a strange outfit, throw him at a criminal, and then swoop in while they're busy taking in the ridiculousness of what's happening to them.

Besides, Bats would just tell you that getting pummeled by someone twice your size, and maybe three times your age 'builds character'.
