Wolverine: Weapon X #6

Four awesome Wolverine books in two weeks. That hardly happens, but with Daniel Way capturing the essence of Daken and Jason Aaron now the premiere Logan writer, expect these things to happen again. But, no book may have been better than this one. It's Wolverine flying under a cookoo's nest, his visit to arkham, his...you get the picture. Logan's fallout from Strikeforce X was finding himself in a mental institution and it's a subject only Aaron could be more than qualified doing. It's his type of story, with his Ghost Rider background and his PunisherMax looming. Many may have said "oh not another Wolverine book" but this one's the best and should be the definitive title for months (years?) to come.

4.5/5 Bags&Boards = Just Awesome

This issue is essentially more of the some savory madness that was Insane In The Brain's initial outing. While paying $4 for something that's merely a continuation is a little rough, Jason Aaron takes Logan places we'd never thought imaginable. I mean, this is torture.

Wolverine's faced some pretty vile characters in his hay-day; none tougher than Magneto. But has this Dr. Rottwell (love the name) placed himself in the top 5? What is this guy, a combination between Joker, Leatherface, and the Tinkerer? Pretty nutty. The montage of mental patient deaths is pretty chilling.

I guess the only drawback is that the issue's key moment lacks the "oomph" it intends only because we've seen a similiar reaction in Old Man Logan. Other than that and the high price tag, Aaron's got himself another winner.

I just want to know what drug is being used on him that actually has an effect? Is this the begining of a much needed NERFing of the heeling factor?

Wasn't a big fan. Am I missing something here? I thought the first book in the arc was a near-classic, these last two are sort of dragging. I guess it's because we've seen all this before--even Wolverine himself notes this--with plenty of mind-control, brainwashing, snikting and so forth. Since you know he's going to overcome the situation, how truly great of a threat is it?

See: Weapon X graphic novel.

And the dream sequence involving the reporter and her "cruel intentions" with Logan doesn't make much sense. Well, except the fact just about any woman--hopefully unmarried--would probably want something with Hugh Jackman...

3/5 Bags&Boards - This is about as bad as Aaron gets, which means it's still good. Things should clear up in the finale.

Was really hoping to see more creations like charly chainsaw in this issue. But who is this guy that can do this level of science? I can't wait to find out. I think he has done something that even Pym or Richards would be both impressed and disgusted by. It seems almost sililar to the stuff that Osbourne had going on in the HAMMER facility with the psychics, but with just crazy people's brains. I'm glad to see someone new for wolverine to fight against.

I think that that sequence wasn't a dream, but more a flashback to fill in the gap in the story we had for two issues going... how the fuck did wolverine get here?

As much as I enjoyed the arc, I was pretty disappointed in it. Dr. Rot is a superb villain, an original if there ever was one. It's just that it took 10-years to tell this short story; mafia figures in the book disappear without explanation; Psychlocke and Nightcrawler are great characters to help Logan, but nonetheless feel like cheap plot devices; and the ending was pretty poor. Overall, it's still a solid read, an improvement over the last issue or 2, and hope for a nemesis that's worth of giving Wolverine at least a shread of fear. I just wish it moved a little bit quicker than a snail's pace.

3.5/5 - I'm assuming this will all read better in trade. What doesn't these days?

#9 was pretty cool, I hope Dr. Rot comes back more often. Jason said that he's basically Wolverine's 'Joker' which is cool.

A thankful breather from all the horrific gore that preceded this. Wolverine's in love again. Thankfully its with the same reporter we've been given short glimpses of ever since Aaron began his run. She's not the most interesting or multi-dimensional woman Wolverine's ever encountered, and for that, it's a good thing. Aaron pulls no punches in having Logan get advice from his friends; how each of these X-women or Avenger-chick comes off is what makes the issue so fascinating. It's an interesting parallel to see how Logan goes about his lovelife (often being used) while his son does quite the opposite (manipulating). The art does an excellent job at using avant garde shadowing and technicoloring to show how hollow Wolverine's heart is. The last page rounds things it.

4/5 Bags&Boards - Another win for Aaron.

#10 was alright, but not to my personal liking. The writing was good but I'm sorry I'm just not interested in a whole issue focusing on Wolverine's women, who he dated and who he had 'relations' with. A few pages is fine, but a whole issue based on romance isn't something I would normally want to read. I'm glad the next arc is back to the action.

I'm with you on that, it's just for me it isn't that entertaining to read about lovin. Like I said, a page or two is fine if it's just a part of the plot. But having a whole book with 22 pages of a straight up romance with nothing crazy, just talking about relationships... ect it just isn't something I'd usually enjoy reading.

I was written well, I just don't get entertained by reading about that topic Smile

Personally I thought #10 was a great filler issue after the insanity of that last arc.

It was pretty fun seeing how all of the MU ladies view Logan, plus the one liners were off the charts hilarious:

"I once did it behind a burning car during a fight with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants."

"Have you ever done it on a bed of dead ninjas before?"

How can you not laugh at those? Plus the reveal at the end sets things up nicely for a more action packed issue next month.

I'm kind of surprised that this book isn't getting more hype than it is, honestly this is the first Wolverine book, outside of Dark Wolverine, that I've enjoyed in years. Jason Aaron is writing a pretty exciting and very enjoyable little chapter in Wolverine's history here.

Wolvie: W-X #11

Since this title is likely becoming THE essential Wolverine book in terms of continuity--with much reference to the "return" of Steve Rogers--this thread should be merged with the other "Wolverine" topic thread.

As for the issue, this might be the second best issue of Wolvie since the Strikeforce X finale; Wolverine takes Steve Rogers on a cross-world bar crawl that gets as interesting as you'd think, all the while writer Jason Aaron develops Deathstroke as THE Terminator of Marvel. And it's all so lovely. As a mostly set-up issue, it stands up to be the best Marvel Book this week (despite the fact I didn't get to read Iron Man yet, but I'm going on a whim). The other artists may have done their job quite admirably in the past arc and one-shot, yet Ron Garney's return stands to be the best possible news for the title.

If Aaron keeps up with this new and relative storyline for Logan, and the art can continue to impress, this team should have no problem producing the best Wolverine stories since the Claremont/Miller age; and that's no small feat.

4/5 Bags&Boards - As close to a 4.5 as you're going to get, but I can't wait to see more.
