I loved this book, too bad sales were too low for it to continue. But I think it will be recurring as a back up for Incredible Hercules...which is awesome news!

Wait, was this canceled? I thought the main title was just on hiatus as they did the small crossovers with X-men and the like.

No sadly its been canceled. Sucks, but at least it will be an ongoing back up in Incredible Hercules.

Since it's in the backup for Hercules, shouldn't it just share the same thread w/ that title?

Marvel Boy: The Uranian #1

Agents of Atlas MarvelBoyTheUranian01.

I thought this would be an appropriate place to talk about this book. I'm not sure if anyone is reading this (in the whole country lol) but I thought this first issue was really good. A good modern retelling of Marvel Boy/Uranian's origin, which I knew little about before. It was cool to see Timely Comics in there too lol. The art was servicable but not very good...especially compared to the amazing covers by Djurdjevic.

I got the first one at Midtowncomics.com

I was suprised to find it, considering that amazon.com has the book listed as out-of-print...

it definitely gives good background before reading the Dark Reign trades and those that follow...plus it's full of all kinds of goodies...definitely worth the $...

Avengers vs. Agents of Atlas #1

I was pleasantly surprised to see this battle/team-up consist of the Agents and the NEW Avengers, since a "classic" Avengers re-hash (from an arc told earlier in the book) would've been stale. Does this mean the classic team is completely dormant? I'm not telling you. But what we get here is another brilliant mini-in-the-making from Jeff Parker, for no matter how his group is formatted (one-shots, ongoing, back-up, mini, other books, etc.) he presents them as legitimately entertaining. Parker isn't afraid to throw every object imaginable at both groups, giving an otherwise simple premise much-needed action and intrigue.

I also like the fact Wolverine helps his pals acknowledge the results of the last time one of his ten-thousand groups dealt with the Agents, adding a nice little continuity-push to a mini that otherwise reads as in a world of its own. It's these little touches that make Jeff Parker's saga worth following. The book also includes a solid backup featuring Namorita, who's been giving a solid push in other books lately; the Manga art distinguishes itself from the rest of the book, but doesn't distract from the overall moral.

While it pains me to shed extra cash for mini's and one-shots that aren't enitirely conducive to the current happenings in Marvel, I have no problem supporting Jeff Parker's Agents in anything their involved in.

4/5 Bags&Boards - No surprise here.

I'm excited they're getting another shot, but I continue to be baffled by Marvel's practice of canceling a title only to relaunch it several months later. I highly doubt re-branding it is going to usher in a host of a new readers.

It's also interesting that Marvel are so committed to this team that doesn't sell very well when they don't give some other books more than a 4 or 5 issue chance. I'm with you, Joshua, I doubt this book will even make it to issue #12 - not criticising the content but sometimes if something doesn't click it just doesn't click no matter how many different ways you try to sell it.

Anyway, I think this explains Gorilla Man's place in the Heroic Age picture we've seen.

Maybe I'm biased because I enjoy the series so much, but I feel it wasn't given a long enough chance. While there are obviously some titles that will always get big numbers with their first few issues, I think most titles (especially the lesser-known ones) need more time to gain readership. Often it seems people are hesitant to pick up a title that has less than 24 issues because there's such a good chance it's going to get canceled. It's a sign of good faith to consumers when they see a title isn't going to be canceled within a year or two of launch. Lord knows some of my favorite books didn't even get purchased for several years, but because they were on shelves, I eventually gave them a chance and fell in love. Agents of Atlas probably won't ever deliver huge numbers, but given enough time to garner an audience I do think it could become a solid title.

I'm surprised Marvel is giving Jeff Parker so much opportunity to write this team. But I've been a big fan of AoA so I'm definitely down for this.

A.O.A. vs. Avengers #2

Just when I thought I saw this all before from Jeff Parker, he produces priceless Avengers dream sequences following the sweet sounds of siren Venus. I was thinking, "oh no, not this again" when Venus came to save the day, but seeing Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor dream of their own desires saved it.

Unfortunately, this issue relies too much on a fairly predictable slugfest between clans. The first issue of this mini threw out a lot of surprises at the classic Avengers group and Parker's most-loved Atlas group. This time, not so much. There are other quotables and sequences worth mentioning, however, such as Ken Hale the Gorilla Man pebble-skipping Cap's shield into the ocean and Namorita dragging Thor into the drink. The art did little to overwhelm me either.

The backup is a little minute-and-a-half romp where Woo is fooled by Master Lao into partaking a brutal battle over some rare nugget. It's silly and lacks the substance of last month's extra. While a cool read, no $4 book should be finished in 10-minutes.

2.5/5 Bags&Boards - Might just be the worst issue of Parker's Atlas yet, but not without any enjoyable moments.

AOA vs. Avengers #3

It appears there's no one else at PoP buying this other than myself. This issue is MUCH improved over last month's. Many of the interactions, reactions, and reactions to interactions are priceless. It may have been Jeff Parker's dream as a youth to write an Avengers comic, so I'm sure he's moonlighting through all these scripts.

The Hulk always makes a great antagonist, despite how warm and lovable we know the Big Green Banner can be. His overwhelming exuberance leads to some pretty intense team-ups between the Old Avengers and Atlas (i.e. Namorita and Thor), and an overabundance of humorous idioms (Hank Pym's techno-verbiage only coming off the heels of Banner's reveal) and classic ironicies (Iron Man monitoring M-11's every movement). There's a lot to love in this book if you're a fan of yesteryear.

Paul Cornell also guest-writes the backup, teaming with usual PNC Leonard Kirk, to spotlight Venus in a very tongue-in-cheek take on dating advice--infomercial style. It's a nice bit that releases much of the tension from the overwhelming timestream stuff in the main story. If more $3.99 books had back-ups like these, there wouldn't be much reason for complaint.

3.5/5 Bags&Boards - Should be an excellent conclusion!

well, I read the Dark Reign one first in singles before buying the original mini in trade format, so no worries there. It serves as a nice backstory if read this way Smile

I'm going to keep buying Atlas as long as either Parker, Cornell or Tobin are handling it...and while this is Parker's baby, assuming he'll be busy, I wouldn't mind seeing all three share scripting duties.

This was a solid mini if you're interested in this character's background. I think Jeff Parker will carry over a few plot threads from this book to his brand new start with Atlas, namely the Uranians. Overall a decent story but nothing essential.

Atlas #1

I've liked Jeff Parker's run on Agents of Atlas so I'm on board for this for at least the first arc (or until it gets canceled again, whatever comes first lol). This issue was solid but I was a little disappointed that the actual AoA were barely featured, the issue mostly focuses on 3-D Man. It does a good job with him fleshing out his background and everything, but just wasn't expecting that when I got this issue. I did really like the secondary story though with the team in the 50s. I'm interested in what this flashback with Yellow Claw and Mr. Lao (aka giant talking dragon Laughing) is setting up...

There's a dichotomy going on here. If you're A.) An A.O.A. fan since its inception, you're gonna love this issue; you already know ALL about the Agents, therefore a story about the new and much improved Triathalon--now called 3-D Man--is what you want, or B.) Someone new who's heard about Parker's run through word of mouth and upon reading this issue see that the Agents are nowhere to be in sight.

Of coure I'm of the former, and while I completely agree that a #1 issue should have contained more of Atlas' involvement--perhaps this should have been a 3-D Man one-shot--I still find the issue fantastic. I thought Triathalon was the butt of all Avengers jokes during Busiek's epic Assembled run. To make this guy whose only redeeming value was that of being a Skull Kill Crew member--eek--appealing is saying something. Also, I wasn't the biggest fan of Hardman's artwork during the Avengers vs. Atlas mini but he turns it up a notch here. In fact, a lot of the artwork contained that grainy realism we see on titles such as Captain America or Daredevil (Epting, Ross?). This could be a good turn for the series.
