I sent Shamus a long letter on Facebook complaining to him about the way the fans of North Texas got screwed in this deal, and how Austin is pretty much central to Texas while Dallas was central to Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Okalahoma, New Mexico....

I don't delude myself into thinking he'll read it and/or respond, but at least I've told the douchebag in charge how I felt. Smile

Have fun at the convention! I -seriously- wish I was going, with Nick Brendon going to be there. Sad I love me some Xander!

Now I'm going to go cry myself to sleep and dream about Ultimate Fighting Mister Shamus with a chainsaw and a shaker of salt and iodine.

Psstt...Hey Doug....Just hang out at the bar at whatever hotel they are all staying at, that's how I got this.

Also, there is a DVD dealer called Another Heaven that I am friends with on Facebook. They pretty much set up at every Wizard show and he states he has 50 passes to the show. He pretty much says that for every show. Funny how a dealer gets that many yet a outlet that covers comic book related news on the web gets limited to 3.

Ack, reread your post Doug, sorry, didn't realize it was more travel reasons. Shamus is an idiot anyway, he is going to be the reason for con burn out.

Even as poorly run as this convention is, I've had a pretty good time. Got to hang out with Greg (Aequitas) a good part of yesterday, so it was nice to have Fort Awesome partially represented. The hotel was incredibly dead last night, no kind of after party as far as I could tell, though I didn't get there until around 10:30 or so. Had some drinks with Billy Tucci, toasted to "Fuck Lou Ferrigno" and then called it a night.

Like most of the Wizard convention stories these days, I'm having a great time, but the convention itself is beyond terrible for anyone who's ever been to a really good show.

I'm hoping that tonight after I hit the gym I'll be able to upload some pictures and give a brief summary of the convention, but until then enjoy some text messages I sent out over the weekend.

"Driving around downtown and saw a dude in a newsboy cap; thought it was you for a second." (to Greg)

"Just saw a little dog wearing a hoodie."

"On the con floor. I already miss C2E2."

"North Tower misses South Tower." (to Eli)

"Wow, Wizard World Austin is fucking TERRIBLE."

"Oh, I'm not upset. I'm almost impressed with how inept it is."

"Seriously, this show makes Chicago Comic Con look like SDCC."

"Just saw Barbara Gordon in a wheelchair. Fucking misogynist."

"Dude, there's a MARCHING BAND performing here."

"This is frigging surreal."

"There was a "room sanfu" and now the costume contest is being held on stairs by a bullhorn-wielding Defuser. No lie."

"'Partying with Gandalf' just came up in conversation and I wasn't the one to bring it up."

Nope having fun is what it's all about. Sorry I didn't get to talk with ya more,I stayed pretty busy most of the weekend.

This con was pretty small and a little lack luster on the guests that actually showed up. On the business side of things it was good, sold lots of prints and sketches so that's always nice.

Not bad at all. I had fun too, but it was in spite of how poorly organized everything was, not due to it. Pushing the artist alley tables up against the wall really crippled the convention. I don't know if it was Wizard's doing or something ACC mandated, but that created all kinds of traffic problems. The lack of carpets also didn't do my feet any favors. I was also initially disappointed with how few dealers there were due to the media guest space taking up so much of the floor, but I found some great half-price TPBs so in the end it wasn't a big deal.

The biggest problem I faced was that there just wasn't enough to do to warrant going more than one day, and even in one day you're going to be left with time to fill. The only reason I did two days was so that I could leave my sketchbook with artists overnight and pick it up on Sunday.

All those gripes aside I still had fun. Wizard World is clearly aimed at a different target audience than one I occupy, but so long as it remains a place I can fill sketchbook pages I'll probably continue to give it a shot.

I don't think it was a matter of seriousness. Your text was a dickish thing to post. I was insulted by it, but I wasn't going to mention it because arguing with someone who does something just to be a dick is a waste of time, even if it is someone I thought I was on decent terms with. And life's too short to be a dick, so I guess it goes both ways.

That being said, despite Wizard's reputation for putting on sub-par shows, it is a good primer for a con experience. It's got all the components of the big-time shows, it just devotes it's time more to the retail aspect of it. If you wanna go to get some good deals on nerd merch, I can't think of a much better place to go. And what matters most, is that Spazzy had a good time. That's what's important. Smile

Where's Jeffro with a RapeAxe joke when you need him?

I had a hasty, butthurt response sitting here, but I didn't like it so I decided to edit it and ramble in my defense.

Here at Panels on Pages, I feel like I know some of you well enough to joke with you. Like a big dog, I tend to play a little rough. It's not a malicious attack, it's just how I tend to act with people who I feel have a somewhat similar sense of humor. I make fun of Knize for things like masturbating to food and me banging his mom. I make fun of Lee because his head is the size of two Montanas. I make fun of Kerouac because he's fucking Kerouac. And likewise, they all give me shit in return. We're all human, we all have foibles, and this board tends to collect people who have tough skin and give each other shit. Hell, I tend to be self-deprecating and point out my own myriad of flaws in a comedic light. That's just how things roll, we make light of serious topics. When I made (and repeated) my Killing Joke comment, it wasn't even targeting a single person, but rather a message board situation that got blown out of proportions on both sides. I could be wrong, but I doubt anyone even took it as any kind of attack until I started being called names.

If you don't want me to make jokes that reference you in any kind of indirect or ancillary manner, that's fine, I'll respect that; it's a fair request. However, please don't sit there and call me names and expect to be treated like grown-ups.

Was Barbara Gordon in the wheelchair as Cosplay, or was it just a redhead in a wheelchair? This is important, as it pertains to which Rapeaxe joke I use.
