I was never very good at Tony Hawk, the controls never felt natural to me. Not being good at it is likely why I was never a huge fan of the games, but part of it was the insane nature of the game. Any game where I could get beaten by someone because they knew how to get high enough to grind on power lines turned me right off.
A good friend of mine is a huge fan of the Skate series from EA. He loaned me Skate 2 after he got 3, and within a week I picked up 3 for myself.
The way tricks are handled in the series is by flicking the right stick. Hold it down and your character crouches on his board, and a quick flick up makes him olly up into the air. Variations of this are how you do almost every trick. a fireball motion will do one trick, making a triangle by hitting 3 points on the circle you thumbstick represents will do underflips, etc.
The controls are good, the various gameplay modes (which include 'Hall Of Meat' challengers where you throw yourself off objects and try to wipe out as hard as possible) are excellent and I haven't even touched on the best part.
Character customization is a must in just about any game I play. I can live with changing the color of my character's armor if that is all there is, but I like choosing my face, adding my glasses, picking out my gear, etc.
This game is full of sponsored gear from widely know places like Adidas to specialty skate companies like Alien Workshop. Lots of cool stuff.
You can also go to skate.ea.com and design your own logo, since part of the game is running your own skate company this makes perfect sense, and putting the editor online instead of in game was a great move. For example, my skate company is called Electric Sheep, and I made this board for my guy to ride based on the image I use for my avatar;
Playing around with the editor (which isn't perfect, but does the job) I made this sticker as well;
If you are at all into skateboarding I recommend this game. I think everyone should at least rent it and give it a shot.
