The Dexter books are AWESOME POSSUM! My mother got them for me for my birthday, and I've pretty much blown through them. I'm early into the fourth book now, and will be caught up and ready to read the new one when it comes out later this year. Anyone else read these? Out of the first three, I think the third is my fave, but I've loved them all and had no complaints with anything. It's nice that they're much different than the TV show, so after the first one, I can be suprised by the plot. I was really in a reading slump, taking forever to read something, and not being very interested in whatever it was that I was reading. But Jeff Lindsay has changed all of that.

Jesus I sound retarded in this post. Right? It's like an excited twelve year old wrote it. Whatever, Dexter rules.

My wife read these. She likes the show and all, but the vibe I got from her is that she didn't really enjoy them. She has weird taste though, so.....

I've heard a lot of people who like the show don't like them. They're a different beast, but I may enjoy them more than the show.

The books are written by regular authors right? not the people who write the show?
I agree that most times books are better than the show (Supernatural, Smallville, Highlander, etc) in my experience anyway

The books are written by Jeff Lindsay. They were books before they were a show. The first season of the show is basically the first book, but after that they are pretty different.

I've only read the first one, which was well-written but didn't thrill me that much because I knew what had happened from watching the first season. I'll have to check out the other books.

Same here. Read the first one after watching the first season, some of the lines from the show are lifted right from the book. The first season was the closest to the Dexter in the books, then the show Dex kinda went off on his own tangent. There are pros and cons to the book Dexter and the show Dexter.

I forced my self to read all 4 books. To give them a chance. And well....I just did not enjoy them. I found some parts to be mildly entertaining. But for the most part I do not like Jeff Lindsey's writing style. Granted I have seen seasons 1 and 2 of the show. And I knew the show was from the first book then the two story lines split. But just the way he writes some of the characters they just grated on my nerves. And there were times the running narrative made me want to pull my hair out. And any time a writer takes a whole book to lead up to a point and finishes the climax in the last two chapters pisses me off.
