I was shocked until I read:

"Below is a list of 10 popular Graphic Novels that have faced removal."

The title of the article made me think they were actually removed. To think a book like Maus and Bone would even be considered is shocking.

...you do know that if has faced removal, that means it's been removed from a classroom (or library, etc.), right?

From what I understood it means the book faces scrutiny. Catcher in the Rye is on that list and I just saw it in my girlfriends school library last week.

Does it differ from state to state?

I've read that page about a million times, dingus. Wink And actually yes, regulations on censorship differ from state to state, town to town, school district to school district. Usually if a book is featured during Banned Books week, it means that it's been taken out of libraries or classrooms at some point. Just like what you noticed with Catcher in the Rye, which has DEFINITELY been pulled from classrooms, books can be brought back from that list. Fortunately, the ALA and the first amendment have made it so that a lot of the books we see on Banned book lists like the one I linked above aren't taken away.

But the fact that they are submissions on the site means that someone at some point has wanted to get rid of them, and probably been successful at doing so, at least within their own school district.

I didn't post the article for you Meg. I know you have your info Wink . I looked a little more into it and posted the link for anyone else who was interested.

I would love to find out who tried to get Maus banned and what was their reasoning.

I honestly don't know...Maus is one of my all-time faves. My only guess can be the presentations of the characters as animals? Maybe Polish people don't like being depicted as pigs. But outside that, I really have no idea how Maus can be anything other than educational. SO MUCH commentary on race relations, psychology, and the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder on people who have it as well as their descendants, not to mention its usefulness as a historical survivor account of the Holocaust. Such a good book.

I can understand some of the banned ones, but why the hell are Maus and Bone banned? "Anti-Ethnic"?, the hell does that mean? If they wanted them to be banned from younger kids, they really can't see Bone is one of the best titles for kids?? To me its hard to tell if they accept that all comics and GNs aren't for kids or if they're just keeping on to the old stereotype and lashing iout at their lack of understanding.

Eh, banning books is lame. But at least it's just from the library.

There's a huge thing in my school's library right now about banned books. They have a bunch of the "banned" ones displayed.
