Transformers #1

Ahhh...finally. It's been a while hasn't it? Mike Costa, just off the heels of his instant classic mini, G.I. Joe: Cobra, receives the job he's always wanted and does an admirable job transformering his excellence on this debut issue. What we get right off the bat are two critical moments that I cannot spoil for you. It's just crazy that these shockers would happen right off the bat!

The feeling I get from reading this story is that of Transformers 3. The difference? The Autobots are the protaginists here while humans play the villains. Smart move, considering most of the human characters spotlighted in recent Transformers comics have been middling. Not that we got Oscar-winning dialogue/performances out of the actors in those movies either, but the book simply had no memorable humans. At least the flicks had Megan Fox...oh and that other kid.

This version of Transformers reminds me of all that is good associated with the franchise. I guess some might not be too happy with the change in designs (i.e. Hot Rod no longer sporting "hot rod" flames). The major doesn't disappoint: Optimus Prime looks as intimidatingly restrained as possible. All major players are here in abundance; it's great Costa has mini-thankfully-not-annoying nametags displayed next to the Autobots. Still, as awesome as Don Figueroa is in detailing tech and displaying battles, you might have to flick a page or two backwards to make sure it's the same 'bot. Nonetheless, the book looks as epic and smooth as possible.

This debut has all you'd want from a Transformers comic. My only hope is that the new villains become more intriguing than a typically cheesy anti-bot squad. If Costa's past writing is any indication, we're in for a hell of a ride. Or flight.

4/5 Megan Fox Posters - Hot! If you're a TF fan, you're a moron if you didn't grab this.

For some reason this book reminded me of a mix of Transformers and Sons of Anarchy. Don't ask me how to explain that, because I can't.

I've never seen a strong response here, or on the WUMB, to Transformers comic talk. I'll have my review of this book up on the main site THIS weekend (got the book late) but I have to say, I loved it.

Decent start to the ongoing. I'm gonna stick around for a few issues and make sure this is worth my money. I loved All Hail Megatron, and hope some of the questions at the end of that mini are answered.(Mostly stuff dealing with the Seekers.)

All Hail Megatron was probably the best TF comic series in the last 10 years.

I'm hoping the ongoing can compete with it in quality.

Thankfully the series shows it's no one-hit wonder with all the big splashes it made last month. The follow-up tones down a little, pushing the focal point of war. Who is at war? Are the Autobats and Decepticons at war with humans? Should the Autobots and Decepticons still be at war? There's a huge sense of paranoia and Mike Costa pours this through each panel. Also, with Optimus Prime...retired (the word?)...who will take over the reigns of this mettled group of Autobots? It's not who you think.

The art continues to be huge, colorful, and dynamic. It's even easier to differentiate the Transformers this time out--thanks to both the updated design of the classic uni's and the small namestamps appropriated for each character. And fred not, there's still wonderfully swift panel-for-panel action despite this turn of espionage.

Stay tuned.

3.5/5 - Looking good so far.

Transformers #3

The best thing about this issue is the cover, and I’m speaking about Cover A.

Surprisingly, writer Mike Costa fails to ameliorate his script’s dialogue this time out, too often sticking to the basic phrases “yeah, yes” and “why can’t?” in reaction to the Transformers fall from grace. The opening few pages are pretty painful to read. I’d like to see that life from earlier in the arc be brought back into his characters. Does this mean without big guns Ironhide and Optimus Prime that the rest of the roster is bland? Definitely not. The now-groveling Bumblebee allows other Formers to flee from his group, clearly lacking the puissant quality of Ultra Magnus. It should be fun to see next issue what the cover exploited, but never went through with (as we do know this is the trend these days).

Since he’s now in the focal point, let’s talk about to America’s favorite Transformer, Mr. Bumblebee. His largess personality differs from the huge “take it all home” mentality revealed last issue. Bee seems confused in this leadership role; the highest example showing too much congeniality to others in the safe cave. There’s no strategy drawn out; no plan of attack. For the sake of the team— and the readers at home—let’s hope the gritt and determination returns. A weak Transformer leader makes for a weak battle, whether it’s with the humans or not.

That leads me to the humans’ capturing of the scattered Autobots. I’m not sure whether they’re vilifying Optimus in these panels, or “helping” him as so they claim. This sudden aversion for Prime doesn’t make any sense if they feel he can be a weapon worth saving. Prime practically pleads for punishment and refuses to give them anything they can use. Bagh.

In Costa’s eyes, the new-found camaraderie between Autobots and Decepticons appears rather picayune; we only get a short glimpse of evil harassment. I figured developing this theme would be obvious considering the history of teaming good and bad has always been…fun…to say the least. Other than seeing the occasional undercover, it’s highly unlikely you’d ever see the G.I. Joes and Cobras working together. Why not dedicate a whole issue to this awesome proposal?

Don Figueroa stays on the art meaning the robots look as gorgeous as ever. It’s a shame he doesn’t put enough detail into anything else, though the combination of having 20-foot robots take up much of the panel and pretty dynamic signature effects make up for it. One in particular shows Tracks leaving a crushing whirlwind to his would-be captures. It’s moments like this that give this ongoing the big-action movie feel it deserves.

By the description of Bumblebee’s inner-turmoil and this “War on Robots” it appears a lot happens in this issue. It doesn’t. There are just too many characters floating around not doing a whole lot, making me appreciate the more-focused issues from Simon Furman that much more. Does it mean the team of Costa and Figueroa can’t get it done? Well, they get it done here; it’s just too much set-up to keep the action from flowing. With the shocker that was issue #1 and the almost-as-cool issue #2, I wouldn’t worry too much. Transformers Ongoing is still the way to go.

3/5 Bags&Boards – Solid issue, just pales in comparison to the earlier earth-crushers.

My prayers have been answered! In my last review I practically begged for an issue dedicated to the sudden, inevitably forced teaming of Autobots and Decepticons. Not only does Mike Costa present us Swindle's Constructicon team "helping" Hot Rod build a way the hell off earth, the writer also brought back the most ambivalent Transformer of them all: Thundercracker. The flashbacks of the blue jet's recovery following All Hail Megatron are superbly narrated and not without touching splashes of humor.

Again, Transformers' resident artist Don Figueroa chooses conveying emotion over environment grandeur; but in an issue so important in developing good/evil relations, personal intents, and plot purpose over mere robot smack-and-smashing, it's the right approach. Oftentimes these bots feel more like superheroes and supervillains than 10-12 tons of metal and steel. With forgiveness to Simon Furman, there's plenty of reason to believe this series will go down as the finest Transformers series yet.

4/5 Bags&Boards - Excellent

April is the week before C2E2, so I don't think I'll make it to that one, and I hope to be moved to Indianapolis well before October.

Transformers #5

High-points: Optimus Prime's speech, without question. Don Figueroa's splash page woke me up through an otherwise sludgy book. Sludgy, of course, in Figueroa's term -- meaning his usual solid self. The close-ups of Optimus staring through the tasered bars were intense. Bumblebee continues to display overwhelming deference to other characters, particularly Magnus; Bee's breakout from this puissant quality should be stunning. Final page proves stunning to longtime 'Formers freaks.

Low-points: Human characters like Spike still don't garner (m)any redeeming qualities, even as the soldier delves into high-speed confrontation. The scene was meant to be humorous, instead, comes off rather bland. Magnus "arrests" Hot Rod again. Swindle "swindles" again without much haggled trickery; his turn comes off too obvious. We see it coming, Costa, at least try to "swindle" us.

3.5/5 Blue Blurs - Despite my b*&#@^ness, I love where this book is going.

Now, see, I can't disagree more on the Swindle front. In most comics, Swindle the scene of Swindle trying to reunite the Stunticons would've happened in issue ONE! Then, in issue 2, Magnus would've mentioned the charge of stealing combiner tech. In issue 3, the Stunticons would've been reunited. In issue 4, you would've seen someone working on them, and someone else would've questioned it. THEN, in issue 5, after it had been telegraphed throughout the entire arc, you would've seen Menasor. Costa dropped all the necessary elements one issue ago, and did so rather organically, seeding what would happen here. Still... there was this small chance that maybe it WASN'T going to happen. What if Swindle actually HAD changed? It COULD be.

Magnus IS sort of a MacGuffin here. All he does is drive back and forth between the Autobots' base and Hot Rod's camp, threatening to arrest people. With that said, I fully expect Prime to return to a leadership role next issue and tell Magnus to eff off. A rivalry between the two could be pretty damned cool.

As for Spike? He's not great, but he's getting better, I feel. Not on his own, mind you, but as a counterpart to Optimus. Optimus admires humanity's ability to change and grow in short periods of time, and that's something that Spike's not good at. Optimus's admiration will almost certainly serve to spur him on to become a better leader, so that he in turn can be a better role model for Optimus AS a leader. I find that very interesting, this sort of symbiotic relationship they're building.
