There's making light, and there's being a jerk to make yourself look funny on the internet. At least when you were joking Pete, they were your jokes, and you were laughing to try and help alleviate a really shitty situation. I don't really see anyone who started this thread laughing right now. These are rights that people are trying to take away, and I would think we would be able to make it more than six posts in before someone's treating it like a joke.

Obviously I don't hide my politics on here, and the one time I tried to say something about politics regarding a freaking comic book, it totally got jammed back in my face, so now even when someone says something kinda shitty, I feel like I literally can't say "I think that's kind of offensive" without it being MY problem because I'M the one who just can't take the joke. I get that bullshit from fuckwads who leave 4-chan long enough to troll the sites I like to visit, so when I see it here it gets really fucking frustrating.

Especially when the most frequent excuse is, "LOL what's your problem, it's just jokes, I'm not seriously like this in real life."

But here's the thing. We're a pretty tight-knit community here and we're pretty inclusive to anyone wanting to join this crazy little family, so the "this isn't me IRL" excuse doesn't really fly here because a lot of us have seen each other IRL. If this isn't how you act in real life, how am I supposed to know that you're NOT a total tool when I meet you at C2E2? Internet interactions do count, even if you don't think they should, and I seriously don't want to think that anyone here is some asshole. I really don't! I want to hang out with everyone and have an amazing time and not feel like I can't talk to certain people for whatever reason. So yeah.

E-mail your rep. Please.

Ok. Here's my two cents.

This board is a community. We interact, fight, love, and have a fuck ton of fun. That being said, there are some issues discussed here that are very sensitive. This is one of them. The aforementioned TJK thread was another one. The difference is one of them was about a fucking comic book, and this one is about the erosion of the rights of women. The very fact that this could become a reality makes this a lot more serious.

I have women in my family, and among some of my dearest friends that have been victims of sexual assault.(Also some of my male friends have been victims) I have female friends that are very dear to me that have had to consider whether or not an abortion was the right choice for them. The fact that the choice may be taken from them by our government makes me physically ill.

There is a time and place for joking, and my personal view is that this is not one of them. This issue touches a lot of a lot of people. It's not an issue of free speech, it's an issue of tact. What you may feel is a harmless joke may affect someone in our community very deeply. There are things that you would not joke about in IRL with certain company, and maybe applying that filter here may be a good idea.

That said, this is just my opinion, and no way am I speaking for anyone else.

This movement isn't just about abortion, it'll greatly impact the health of millions. Planned Parenthood screens for breast and cervical cancer, tests for STDs and provides birth control. A direct quote from President of Planned Parenthood, "Less than 10 percent of our services are related to abortion."

Going to the doctor is expensive without insurance. For me it's $200 for the visit and test results. If those results come back abnormal, then it's $1000+ get a colposcopy - that's the exam to see what stage your abnormal cells are at, if they're cancerous. PP provides these services at a greatly reduced cost to women who qualify.

If women are no longer able to get screened for cancer if Planned Parenthood is shut down.. what the fuck. Everyone deserves to be healthy.

For women to no longer be able to get this service if Planned Parenthood is shut down is a fucking crime. Everyone deserves to be healthy.

Very good point. I'm not a lady, so that part of the issue did not come to mind. I was talking from my experience and what I read.

Somehow that didn't make me feel much better about it.

Sometimes people make jokes about heavy things. Deal with it.

I understand, and can empathize with your feelings. It's not an issue about joking, it's an issue about respect for the community we have here, and its members. Telling someone to deal with a joke about an issue like this isn't very respectful.

It would be one thing making an argument one way or another, but just throwing a zinger out there to stir the pot is another. I'm just asking for a hot button issue like this to try and be sensitive.

Hell if someone here is pro-life, or thinks that rape should be redefined they should totally be able to express that viewpoint. Hopefully we could discuss the issue maturely, but often in issues like this that isn't the case.

And here's my two cents:

The energy being used to be pissed at and tweet angrily about comments made in this thread could be better used to educate and inform about the more important issues at hand.

Let's try to remember who the real "bad guys" are in this situation.

That being said, this topic will remain open, but any further discussion/argument about the comments made will be deleted.

I'm not fucking having it.

And there you have it. I redirected my anger, and contacted my Congressman, Daniel Webster.

NO to the "War on Women"

Contrary to Speaker Boehner's assertion, the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act", the "Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act", and the "Protect Life Act" are not, and SHOULD not be amongst our "highest legislative priorities". Removing federal funding from Planned Parenthood and similar organizations is short-sighted, harmful, and hateful. As the Congressman representing my district, I will pay close attention to you and your colleagues' approach to this issue.

Here again are the links provided by Foxy. The "writerep" funtionality is simple.

Im sure they are not mentioning that is whats being cut when they make their speeches. Heres probably what they say "We dont want federal dollars paying for abortions. So we are not going to give money to planned parenthood, the abortion place." Now they are not mentioning the other stuff that PP does....

Planned Parenthood rocks. Being a grad student at a catholic institution means that my wife's birth control isn't covered by her health plan. PP is able to offer it pretty cheaply.

The more I think about this, could this just be a really shit way to negotiate? Hear me out. The gop hates, despises, gov run health care ( cause it doesn't work right?). So they pull this stunt ... this won't pass the senate, or the prez will veto it. So the gop in a week or so go "we will concede the pence bill if you concede single payer health care"....
Dirty politics.... I'm all for cutting the budget but pets not do it on education or health care....

My roommate just said something similar that if they are gonna cut PP then we are gonna need free health care. Like Foxy said earlier It really does cut down for people who need to be tested or get birth control, PP is very important and if its gonna be gone then we are going to need something in return.
