If you've missed it in the news the GOP is on the attack to destroy women's rights and health. They have Planned Parenthood in their sites and are looking to bring it down with a series of bills. If you have a uterus or care about someone who does this is a VERY BIG DEAL.

The video is a bit long (30 minutes) but a good summary of what's going on. http://www.democracynow.org/seo/2011/2/16/a_war_on_women_gop_bills
They also have a transcript available if you can't watch.

'We Won't Go Back' ad, which will begin airing on TV shortly

There are so many more stories to go along with this but quite frankly after reading about it all day I'm mentally exhausted.

If you are against this movement, please write to your representative.
This site will help you find out who that is and send you right to a contact page.

Seriously. Click the link and do it. It hardly takes any time, and this shit is super fucking important. Laugh at me for my politics or whatever, but this is fucking happening, and it is literally chipping away at women's rights.

I just emailed my representative. Only takes a minute people!

Here are some more reasons this is important in case you needed any:
http://www.livestrong.com/article/13934-nine-reasons-why-abortions-are-legal/

I've read things about "back alley" abortions--how they had to do them before it was legal to have an abortion. Thousands of women died from complications. One story in particular I remember was a college age girl that was so ashamed she had one, she hid in the bathroom of her dorm room and bled to death because of complications.

Sometimes they are right, like when they say, "Hey, your shirts dirty." I say "Yes it is, go wash it now!"

On a serious note though, these are the bills/legislation that Republicans are trying to pass

HR.3, which proposes to prevent taxpayer funding from being used for abortions, and to redefine rape to support the tax funding issue of this bill.

HR.358 The Protect Life Act, this law would make the Hyde Amendment permanent (which is the amendment that prohibits federal funds to be used to cover abortions, but needs to be voted on every year), as well as allow hospitals to refuse abortions even if the abortion is the only way to save the patient's life.

And there was also this bill from South Dakota (which has thankfully been shelved) that would have made killing an abortion doctor justifiable homicide

If someone has an opposing opinion, fine. But if YOU (and that's a general you) actually care about women's rights and start throwing around jokes, that helps no one and lessens the importance of this.

1) What I say, in no uncertain terms, should never lessen the importance of anything.
2) Jokes (as offensive or unfunny as some may find them) are designed to not be taken seriously, but to get a laugh.
3) If the personality I have propagated on this forum is what you believe my genuine beliefs to be, then you might be missing the point.

I am not interested in hindering the rights of any woman, but I could be the guy dropping statistics and stories in an unfunny manner about how a woman's right of sole choice may have pushed some potential fathers to traumatic mental problems such as depression and even suicide. War on Women 29517

Jenn and I were talking about all this a couple of days ago. This is horrible! And for those who think it's just a woman's issue remeber you have a mother, sister, girlfriend, wife, friends who this will impact.

Another thing to consider is if this passes What's next? why stop their? Next they can set their sights on Civil Rights laws or other freedoms that directly impact you. Just look at how the German gov't start to gradually take the rights away from Jewish citizens before they went to "The Final Solution"

Just take a minute and inform yourself and don't just brush this aside because you believe it just impacts women.

I initially planned to stay out of this because, well, my personal politics tend to be fairly polarizing to people on both the right and left, but I found this particular part interesting.

On the surface it seems like all it's doing is keeping federal taxes from paying for abortions, something I can actually get behind and something that will appeal to a lot of moderates and libertarians who don't read the full bill. However, it's a bit of a hoodwink because if you read deeper it turns out that:
It seeks to prohibit even indirect funding streams that may potentially come in contact with abortion services. For example, it would deny tax credits to companies that offer health plans that cover abortions and it would block anybody with insurance that covers abortions from receiving federal subsidies, even if the abortion portion is paid separately with personal funds.

I'm a big believer in small government and abortions being paid for by federal taxes is anything but, however, what people want to do with their own money and body is not for the government to decide. Of course, I don't even think the government has the right to tax our income so I don't really agree with how they spend most federal money.

Of course, I don't really support either pro-life or pro-choice on a federal platform, as I think it should be up to the individual states, but that'll never happen. States' rights are diminishing with every passing year.

This is a serious matter and should not be taken likely, but I really don't see the harm of cracking a few jokes here and there.

People in this community are pretty understanding to other members needs. I'm sure nothing will get out of hand, but when I was in a hospital bed fighting for my life, I cracked jokes about myself and that was a very serious matter.

If you lighten up about something this serious, sometimes there is light at the end of the tunnel to make this a topic such as this, better. Worked for me. Smile

Not getting into the jokes ...

On this debate.... I first thought this was just a "see we tried" bill. If you want to do more damage than contact your local tv station. Ask for the news director and ask him/her why this isn't a bigger story?. Stage a small rally and tell em to bring cameras.

I have a personal opinion about abortions, but that's based on my faith. But I don't think anyone has the ability to tell another human being how to live. Will I think less of you for something, Hell no. I do not judge. Plain and simple the govt has no place to tell us what we can and can not do with our bodies or with our loved ones.

If this bill gets passed, then its a slippery slope. Remember the nazis didn't start out with the Jews. First they removed the rights of the mentally impaired. Then moved on to foreigners then race....
