I read the first HC (issues #1-12) couple of years ago (and awhile back again) and thought it was very good, but sadly in the second part the kitsch is hard to ignore and it ruined the story a bit for me.

Scalped gets very good and interesting in volumes 2-3. Volume 4 is my favorite so far.

Just realized, isn't that technically a novel? It does have illustrations, but still. Wink

At my comicshop I picked up Volume 1 of Chew, Taster's Choice.
What Are Your Recent Purchases? What Are You Reading Now? - Page 3 Normal_chew-vol_-1--tasters-choice-tp
Didn't feel like spending $30 alone for the first issue. Heh. $10 isn't a bad deal at all. I'm sure with all their multiple printings that they had more than enough profit to be generous with the tpb, it seems.

Lex Luthor: Man of Steel #1-5 by Azzarello. Had to check this out after reading his GN, The Joker. Me thinks that this is an Elseworld that actually takes place in the same univese as The Joker GN. I mean, same artist, but the designs pertain to the same idea. Like Batman's outfit. Even Joker in the newspaper looks very similar. I thought it was odd that--although TDK and Joker GN had that razor smile--this one's brief glimpse of Joker in the Gotham Gazette had a picture of him with a scarred lining around his mouth. Which, in a sense, The Dark Knight wasn't the first to pull that version of the Joker. Neat. This one really puts an interesting perspective of Luthor's mentality, persona, and his view of his world. Recommended. And I'm not even a Superman fan. (Although his part in the story is peripheral.)

I hope Azzarello and his buddy Bermejo do more minis/GN's about archnemeses and in the same universe. It'd be a neat little Elseworld. Although, I fear that making it too big may give leeway for others to muck it up with their writings.

If you've read the recent Hidden Gems, then you know I hated that story.

Detective Comics #821-836. Paul Dini last writings for the Bat-Family since the current stuff. McGraw and Rozum peak in for some issues, but they didn't mess up the flow, really. My favorite of the lot has to be issue #826.

Best Joker story I've read in a long time. Appropriate for Christmas time.

Suicide Squad #1-19 & Doom Patrol/Suicide Squad Special. I get it now. Completely get the hoopla. So, so cool. I just keep reading them one after another. Can't get enough. The commentaries--social, political, religious, etc.--were probably stronger in their time, but still hold up to today's messes.

It was a great tale, but for me the start was from the start. Each trade so far is just better than the one preceding it.

I saw that. Wasn't looking at the time, I guess.

Felt that way, too. It was the first clash with the Fablelands and The Adversary, brought the connections to their reality in the light. The first story-arc was so self-contained that it almost seemed like Willingham was testing the water for Vertigo's audience.

You should switch this to recently read comicbooks, specifically, Tomer. I know you were first with the general reading of comics and trades, but the tpbs thread has soared off without this one. You could still take the ones mentioning trades to the trade thread. I know that's a hassle, but you could at least change this thread's title. Hrm? Not commanding, just suggesting. Heh.

Detective Comics #840-845. Dini rocks! Peyton Riley, The Ventriloquist & Scarface, is starting to become one of my favorite current Batman (Bat-Family) villains. Smile

Detective Comics #851 & Batman #684. The first two parts of, in a completed story-arc of its own, Last Rites by Denny O'Neil was fantastic. Really enjoyed The Face of Gotham, Millicent Mayne. She's an intriguing character. Really showed Nightwing fumbling Gotham without Batman's help. Love to see more of her, and to see more O'Neil in comics in general, let alone Batman.
What Are Your Recent Purchases? What Are You Reading Now? - Page 3 638655-action_comics_872__2009__large

Detective Comics #852 & Batman #685 by Dini, the Faces of Evil month, and the last two parts of Last Rites. Man, Thomas Elliot is a cold bastard. Loeb did a fantastic job of creating Hush, and other writers may have written some great things that I've not had the privelage of reading, bu Dini really makes this guy a mainstay for the pages of Batman. He's just starting to impersonate Wayne in this story and it is all coming together for the current stuff. Almost connected them.

Next is Gaiman's Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader (BOOK OF THE MONTH!) and Battle for the Cowl mini and one-shots. Smile

At first I meant for this thread to be for trades and OGNs, don't remember if I started it before the Trades one.

It's not much of a hassle with only 4 pages.

Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? Forgot the two issue numbers for Detective Comics and Batman, but it was pretty good. Overhyped it in my head a bit, being that it was Gaiman writing, but still meaningful, as I expected it to.

Battle for the Cowl #1-3, & "": Commissioner Gordon, "": Man-Bat, "": Arkham Asylum, "": The Underground and "": The Network. Pretty cool. Little bit of inconsistency with characterization, but it was a fun read, especially the one-shots.
