Most cons with big name guests have sceduled times where for a fee you can get a picture with the guest of your choice. the only thing is that they kinda pricey. At my con The ECCC they start at 40 dollars and go all the way up. as cool as they are i don't see paying all the money for that. I'd rather spend my money on comics and other swag.

You answered your question. If you would rather spend your $$ on comics and swag then it isn't worth it. It all depends on what you go to cons for.

I think it is pretty silly for celebrities to charge for you to take a photo with them. I will never forget when I went to a con about 4 years ago and Kristin Bell was there. I sat and ate lunch as I saw lines of people getting their pictures taken with her. I decieded I wanted a picture as well, because, well, she is hot and I am a fan of Veronica Mars.

I got up to the lady that was collecting her money and I was informed it was 40 bucks for an autograph and if I wanted a picture with her it would be a total of 80 bucks for the auto and a photo op. I asked if the money went to charity and was told that the money pays for her to be here. I was like, well, I just watched her make at least 3 of my weekly paychecks in the last 45 minutes, I think her trip has been paid for and I just walked away.

I will add though, that if you sometimes go to the bars at the local hotel and happen to see the celebrity there, you have a good chance to get a picture with them without being charged. I have gotton a few that way.

While I agree that the money some celebrities charge isn't always on the same level as the celebrity, I don't think there's anything wrong with charging money. A convention for a celebrity is work. They're taking time away from their schedule, be it work or personal, to go to a convention. I don't know how the business end of things work, i.e. whether or not guests are paid up front from the convention, but I don't see it as being any different from exhibitors or artists charging money for good/services.

I don't mind paying a celeb 10 or 15 bucks if it is someone I know is not getting any real work, but I see big names that are currently working on several shows charging extreme amounts and you just know they realy don't need the money, unless they live a Charlie Sheen lifestyle, in which, I kind of approve because if I made a million bucks a week, you bet your sweet ass I am getting hookers and cocaine. (I stole that last line from some comedian)

1.) You never know what someone's finanacial situation is.
2.) There's nothing wrong with wealthy people making money.

The companies who run the photo ops usually set the prices for the celebrities. I would think too that the celebs are given a flat fee to be available and pose and the photography company pockets the profit.

As for are they worth it.. depends. If you're a big fan and may never have the opportunity to meet this person again, sure. I did one with my dad at CCC '10 for Kristanna Loken. You have next to no personal time with the person - WAY better to get something signed if you want a little chat - but you do get a professionally taken 8x10" out of it.

Side note on Loken, I was boob level with her and she smelled like an angel. I love you

Personally, I think it is a ripoff. I believe that you pay to get in, so you should not have to pay to meet the people inside. If that is the case, then what these cons should do is basically give you a coupon good for one for free.

That being said, I have to do it at WWPhilly in June. I have to meet Lando, the baddest MotherFer is the galaxy

By that logic then artists should not be able to charge for sketches/original art and vendors should not be able to charge for goods.

I don't think that these media guests are paid to show up, I think most of them are invited and this is a money making opportunity for them. They pay for their own transportation, for their own hotel, and probably for a space on the floor.

Conversely, no one is forcing you to purchase the services they are selling. And sometimes you can get lucky and catch them off the floor and grab a picture for free. Tenime_art got a pic with Lori Petty in '07 because we ran into her in the connecting hallways of the convention center, and I saw Ray Park stop for a photo with someone that year in the hotel lobby. Neither time did I see money exchange hands.
