All Manga Looks the Same

Began an interesting debate on the Wizard boards regarding manga that really surprised me. Several posters contend that all the art in manga looks the same to them, while I stated most American super-hero comics look to have similar art to me. I have my own theories, but what do you think?

I think manga at sucks generlly, but does not all look the same.

I definitely do not think that all manga looks the same. It has very diverse looks. Some does looks similar (or identical) but not all of it.

Like in American comics, there our several styles of art in Manga. Generally I don't like Manga, but I'm far from saying ALL Manga look the same.

Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ people are dumb. Are you really gonna tell me you think Fist of The North Star looks the same as One Piece?

That's just as stupid as me saying that Stuart Immonen's art looks identical to that of Alex Ross.

I think people just see the large eyes and small nose and just lump it all together without looking at the art as a whole. It's a short sighted view of the art.

I think at first, someone on there brought up it's all pointy chins and big eyes and I thought to myself about the fact that American comics are generally variations on straight up human anatomy, so what are we arguing? The fact Japan has an established difference in the basics?

There are definitely different styles. Just like Jack Kirby, Kevin Maguire, Alex Maleev, Jim Lee, and Greg Land all differ in styles.

Not all manga looks the same, there's definitely different styles to it. I used to think all comics looked the same with obnoxiously proportioned women and steroid-y, grotesquely muscled superheroes. As I found out, you have to actually get involved in it to realize it's not all the same. Same with manga. There's the big eyes, yes, but there's different styles to different genres. There's shojo manga, which is a more girly style (also characterized by "bishounen" pretty boys):

Ya, I know, right? People can just be very narrow-minded.

Can't say I'm a manga fan, but I really like Priest by Hyung Min-woo. It is so excellent. It reminds me of Desperado meets Evil Dead with kind of a Dante feel with Ivan Isaacs.
