I thought, as the local roller derby expert, that I would open up a thread for questions and discussion. Feel free to ask me anything, I have answers. happy

The National Championships were this past weekend, and they were a huge upset. The top three teams in the nation were out of the tourney in the first round. The winners were the Oly Rollers, a brand new team from Olympia, WA. From their semi-final bout against Denver, here is the cleanest, most powerful leg whip I've ever seen:

How do you win? Do you just have to knock everybody else out? I always thought roller derby was bad ass and if I was less of a wuss I would like to try it. But I know I'd get my ass handed to me, and maybe a couple of teeth. XD

This is a great video explaining the basics. There is one person on the track from each team with a star on her helmet called the "jammer". The jammer scores points when she laps the pack and passes opposing players. All she wants to do is skate fast and get through the pack. The blockers in the pack are trying to get their jammer through while stopping the opposing jammer. The jammer is the only player that can score points.

It's actually very a structured game. Everything is strictly timed, and there are a shit ton of rules (35 pages in all, not counting minimum skill requirements, ref signals, and track layout, all of which we are tested on each year). There is no free-for-all, although sometimes we play that way for fun in practice. Wink

Your teeth would be safe, mouthguards are required equipment. They even make butt pads and tailbone guards. Laughing I have a pair of the padded shorts, but they restrict my movement so much that I don't wear them. I'll risk the bruises.

Oh, you're very lucky to have one of the most exciting and talented leagues in the country in NYC. The Gotham Girls Roller Derby was last year's National Champions and had a 2-year winning streak (18 games) before this year's Eastern Regionals. You can find them at http://www.gothamgirlsrollerderby.com/

Here's a video of one of the Gotham Girls, Beyonslay, giving Rice Rocket a "Slay Ride" last year:

I don't think there are any other leagues in NYC, but with 4 home teams and 3 travel teams, there doesn't need to be another one. They play at Hunter College, and their inter-league championship is this Saturday, but it looks like it's sold out. Sad

I'm so excited! And I just can't hide it!

I finally get to go to Chicago!!! (As if I live THAT far away Rolling Eyes). I forget what other city was a contender for next year's nationals (might have been Detroit yikes), but it was an almost unanimous vote for Chicago.

Announcing Playoff and Championship 2010 Tournament Hosts

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) is excited to announce the selection of the five host leagues for its 2010 roller derby playoff season. The WFTDA’s successful 2009 playoff season culminated with the National Championship Tournament held in Philadelphia in November, and it is now time to begin preparations to do it all again next year.

The 2010 playoff season will kick off in early September and teams will compete to win a place at the WFTDA Championship Tournament. The Windy City Rollers will host the “Uproar on the Lakeshore” WFTDA Championship Tournament at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, IL from November 12 to 14, 2010.

Leading up to the Championship Tournament there are four qualifying Regional Playoff Tournaments, one in each of WFTDA’s four regions. 2010's Playoff Tournament hosts are:

* East Region -- Suburbia Roller Derby, White Plains, NY
* North Central Region -- Brewcity Bruisers, Green Bay, WI
* South Central Region -- No Coast Derby Girls, Lincoln, NE
* West Region -- Sacred City Derby Girls, Sacramento, CA

The WFTDA will release additional information about the 2010 playoff season in the coming months.
