After initial rumours were dismissed earlier today, Metal Hammer is devastated to report that Ronnie James Dio has passed away.
Metal Hammer and the world of heavy metal are in mourning after learning that the legendary Ronnie James Dio has passed away after losing his battle with stomach cancer.
In a statement from his wife and manager, Wendy Dio has said the following:
“Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. [on Sunday] 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away.
“Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all.
“We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us.
“Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss.
“Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.”
The iconic Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Dio and Heaven & Hell vocalist will forever be held in the highest of regards by all fans of rock and metal.
Our thoughts and sincerest condolences go out to Wendy Dio, his family, his bandmates and all who were lucky enough to know a man who will always be known as one of the finest rock singers of our time and one of the most well-loved characters in the history of rock music.
