I thought that I would put up a small review of Life With Archie: The Married Life #1. It's probably not to everyone's taste, but suck on it. I'm gonna review it.
As you know, recently in the pages of the Archie main title, Michael Uslan explored two 'what-if' scenarios that answered fan questions about what would happen if Archie married Betty or Veronica. Both were succinct tales that explored the teens' futures without really telling us anything. That's where this new title comes in.
In magazine format, LWA:TML goes back to a point in each story that's shortly after the honeymoon. Here we get to see how Archie and his spouses deal with the hardships and reality of adult life. Amazingly, they manage to convey some truly mature themes without losing that Archie innocence. There are two stories in each issue, one with Veronica and one with Betty, and while the stories are remarkably different, they have enough similarity that you can sort of see how some things are sort of slated to happen no matter what the universe.
Speaking of which, there's a neat little sub-plot that's barely touched upon that covers both stories and involves Professor Dilton Doiley and his exploration of the Archie multiverse.
If you're an Archie fan, but think that the regular stories might be a little syrupy for you, I recommend checking out this title. The characterizations are dead-on, and some characters reveal a new side of their personality now that they're dealing with the Archie gang as adults and not uppity teenagers.
All in all, 4.5 malts out of 5. They'd have gotten a perfect score if they hadn't turned the 'who would you cast' portions of the magazine into what are essentially Tiger Beat articles. But, that's maybe four pages in total. I still heartily recommend it.
