Of course, since he can't write anymore, I will say I hope to read just about everything Bill Mantlo has written at some point. Mark Gruenwald is another favorite in this vein.

Joss Whedon & Kevin Smith are the only "Buy Without Question" writers for me. There's lots of others that I love, but those two are the only ones who're guaranteed buys.

I'm curious, what did you think of the latter three issues of Smith's The Evil That Men Do arc?

Brian K. Vaughan. I have yet to read anything of his that I haven't loved.

There's tons of others that I like, but those two have really strong track records with me and most others I like either are hit/miss or focus on books/characters I don't care about.

They pretty much sucked. Nowhere near as good as the first half.

Yeah, it's a big reason I stopped buying comics that Smith writes solely because he's on them. The man is not bullet proof because those three issues were awful, made all the more worse because the first three were all solid.

I didn't read issues #1-3 until they were reprinted in a Must-Have edition and they rocked. Month later issue #4 came out and then #5-6 and I was sad to see that that's what Smith came up with after 3 years. Real shame.

Agreed. I didn't even bother with the third issue because I thought the first two were so underwhelming.

It's sad: I was really hoping it was going to be good. But, first issue, we got the Joker willing to get sodomized out in the woods. I'm sure that sounded cool in Kevin's head, but it wasn't even all that funny.

So, bottom line... Kevin Smith is better when he's late?

Quite the reverse. The first three issues of TETMD were on time and were all solid issues. The latter three issues that were three years late were the ones that were complete garbage.

That's what I meant. He had good 3 first issues and then disappeared for three years, only to return with a garbage wrapping. I mean, he's not doing any good by being late, but eventually finishing a story he probably lost interest in over the years is much worse.

I enjoyed Cacophony. Not as good as some of his other stuff, but nowhere near as depressing as the second half of Evil That Men Do.
