Conan (2011)

Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Marcus Nispel has cast his hero in his upcoming re-imagining of Robert E. Howard's iconic Barbarian, Conan. The man stepping into the role that propelled Arnold Schwarzenegger to stardom will be Jason Momoa of Stargate: Atlantis.

Additionally, Latino Review says that an offer has gone out to Mickey Rourke to play Conan's father Corin, though this is unconfirmed at this point. Lionsgate and Millenium Films are producing and distributing the film, which will begin production in Bulgaria on March 15.

You know, this could work. I mean if you look at the early comics he wasn't always this big heap of muscle he turned into later. I am worried about who is distributing the movie, as they don't have the best track record, but more than willing to check it out.

I was thinking the same thing. He coul dbe alright, but the beard has to go.

And the hair. Definately the hair.

He actually has a very universal look, which is possibly why they chose him.

Conan, in the books and comics (especially in Dark Horse), he has a skin-tone that isn't easily discernible. Think it's on purpose.

I just want to know if he can act. I want a more visceral Conan of Cimmeria than even "Barbarian" allowed with its "R" rating.

I really hope it doesn't suffer censorship with a PG-13 rating from the studios in an attempt to make a wider audience. That'd just be...such a waste of license. If it is: DVD. Rental.

Agreed, there needs to be blood and guts. While a PG 13 movie isn't an instant turn off to me, a character like Conan can really benefit from the R.

^ Oh yeah. Definitely benefit. Half of his mythos is based in guilty pleasure: sex & violence. Not ashamed to admit that. His mythos does well with sex and violence.

Although seemingly a womanizer, without Bond-girls, James would just come off as kind of a jerk with such an ego with nothing backing it. Gotta love the guilty pleasures of life and entertainment. Hence the pleasure aspect.

I'll admit, haven't read a comic of that characters in almost a decade, and have never read the books--but I find the stories and general concept enjoyable with its great possibilities. If we can't get a live-action Heavy Metal, I'd like Conan to slake my thirst.

Cautiously optimistic. I agree that this must have an "R" rating.

And a song and dance partway through the movie.

And a cameo from Rob Schneider and/or Carlos Mencia.
