I've brought this up before. I've never been into manga but I would like to give it a try. So come C2E2 I will be stopping by Thatcher's booth (Super Fly Comics and Games) to pick up some books.

Just some background. I am a big Batman fan. I have seen Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Fist of the Northstar and I've loved them all. I have a few friends at work who recommended Naruto.

All suggestions will be appreciated.

Judging from what you mentioned there, I might suggest Oldboy.

I saw the movie. Is the movie based on the manga?

I honestly haven't seen the movie. I think it is. I need to watch the movie at some point, since I've heard good things about it and the manga is pretty good.

I mostly know anime, but I'll give it a shot:

Batman:
Big O
Skull Man by Kazuhiko Shimamoto
Death Note

Akira:
Gantz

Ghost in the Shell:
Black Magic

Fist of the North Star:
Berserk
Shigurui
Blade of the Immortal

Good call on the "if you like Batman, read Death Note" thing. Death Note is a VERY smart cat and mouse type story. I don't think I'm any good to suggest something beyond that, I like the more girly and comedy type things.

Berserk is glorious. How did I forget it? *shame*. And good list, now I have to check on some of these myself lol.

I would also recommend both beserk and death note based on what you said in your first post

for something really fun though I would suggest one piece from round about vol 34 when Luffy and the gang hit water 7

not that it wasn't good before but skypeia is tedious as hell and baroque works while good drags near the end but my god some of the twists in water 7 put some manga to shame they really do

Completely not based off anything other then my own personal favorites

Lone Wolf and Cub
A Drifting Life
Samurai Executioner

Also, the manga for Oldboy was based off of the movie.

Can't vouch for the manga, and want to see the entire series of the anime, but it is a really cool concept that alludes pretty well to Batman. It's like an Elseworlds of Batman. Pretty cool stuff.

Priest by Min-Woo Hyung is my only valid offering when it comes to manga. Super-zombies, fallen angels, misc. monsters, sorcery, and all set in a gothic, spaghetti-western with weapons/tech being pulled from the 20s to 40s with Chicago typewriters and gatling guns. Just an insane ride that is on par with if you were to throw Dante (Devil May Cry) at an "Army of Darkness" set in The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. Not a Western fan, either. Just really cool.

(The upcoming movie adaptation is going to be beyond lame, though. Rolling Eyes)

My taste in manga and anime isn't very broad. Most of the stuff I like it in the same vein.

This is my list of favorite manga from Facebook:

Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, InuYasha, Case Closed, One Piece, Ranma 1/2, Shaman King, Bleach, Naruto, Beet the Vandel Buster

I'd HIGHLY recommend Dragon Ball. As much as I love DBZ, I love DB more. If you enjoy DBZ definitely check it out.

One Piece is another good one. If you like DBZ and Naruto, One Piece would be a good one to check out.

Finally, I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Case Closed (Detective Conan). It's just so much fun. I think it may be my favorite manga/anime (or at least tied with DB/DBZ).

Nothing. Over in Japan the Manga is just called Dragonball. Both the Dragonball and Dragonball Z Animes were adapted from the same Manga. The only reason we have a Dragonball Z Manga in America is to correlate to the Dragonball Z Anime and to save our tiny minds from being confused.

It's one continuous story from Dragonball Vol. 1 to Dragonball Z Vol. 26
