This is a manga & an anime, but he's always been one of my alltime favorite 'heroes':
Osamu Tezuka's "Blackjack."
Osamu brought us "Astroboy" and "Kimba the white Lion," but his character of Blackjack speaks to me on more levels than I can explain. Osamu himself was an M.D., & the "Blackjack" stories are a combination of medical science, imagination, and wish-it-had-beens.
Blackjack is an unlicenced rogue physician who performs under some of the most difficult circumstances. The tag line for the full-feature film is, "The Surgeon with the Hands of God."
He has a darkly mysterious but somehow poetic, romantic look. The man is brilliant, horribly scarred, feared, loathed, and respected. He gets angry, doesn't explain himself to anyone, and charges exhorbitant amount of money for some of the surgeries he performs... or sometimes nothing at all. To me this character is like the Batman of [the medical field] manga.
