Something I brought up on my Facebook that got a lot of attention was the idea of what is an anime? I brought this up because watching Transformers yesterday, I decided to look up Sunbow to discover many of their 80's cartoons were animated by Toei (one of the biggest anime studios in Japanese history). Shows like G.I. Joe, Transformers, Visionairies, Jem, My Little Pony, and Robotix. Further, Marvel had a working relationship with Sunbow but went over them straight to Toei for a few shows such as Dungeons and Dragons, Spider-Man, Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, Pryde of the X-Men, Muppet Babies, and Defenders of the Earth. Toei also animated the first season of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Ruby-Spears Superman series. On another note, Centurions was animated by anime powerhouse Sunrise.

So, are these shows anime? Why or why not?

No, GI Joe doesn't have "standard" anime themes/sensibilities/designs. Regardless of where it was produced, it doesn't really fall into the category, y'know? By the same token, if Dragonball Z were made entirely in America, I'd still consider it anime, I believe.

I humbly request some explanation of this statement. Laughing

Just because They were animated by Japanese studios does not mean they're anime.

The Venture Brothers, if I recall correctly, is animated by Koreans. You wouldn't consider it an anime, though, would you?

I have to agree with this, more so designs than anything else. And while anime has deviated from the classic/more well-known "big eyes and speed lines", the style is still pretty distinctive from most western cartoons, such as GI Joe.

Are you trying to support your argument? Or ours? Duke and Flint have squared off jaws, unlike the pointed or rounded faces of the Voltron force, or pretty much any other anime

I'd say no. Just because something is animated in an Asian country does not make it anime (or manhwa or what have you). Futurama was/is animated by Rough Draft studios, an American and Korean animation firm, and I wouldn't consider the episodes that were animated in Korea to be Anime. Thundercats was developed by Ted Wolf, produced by Rankin/Bass, and farmed out to Pacific Animation for animating. I wouldn't consider that anime either (hell, owning all the episodes I'd be hard pressed at times to tell you they were all from the same cartoon, the animation style changed up so much).

Does Knize like Hentai though? You know he has too he has a penis.

To the question at hand I would have to say no. Though Resolute reminded me more of a good anime. I think it was the darker grittier tone to it all, but when I think anime I think. Voltron, RoboTech, DBZ, Ninja Scroll, Fist of the North Star, Ghost in the Shell. I actually hate most Anime...mostly the poplular J-poppy type stuff, essentially anything a 12 yr old girl would like.

Anime has more to do with the style in which it is drawn and less with where it is made. Most, if not all, American studios have animation work done outside of the U.S., but that doesn't mean any of it is anime.

Even though I don't consider wiki-anything a reputable source, the first line of the article, let alone a good deal of it, supports the style argument. Not giving you a hard time, just saying....
