So, I know that we "officially" (actually... probably don't need those quotation marks) hate Wizard World around here. BUT, is anyone actually planning on going to Wizard World Austin?

I ask this because everything's better with Pop! Right now I'm leaning towards Austin (over Dallas Comic Con) on the hopes that they'll bring a few of those people from their other shows along for the ride and a least a few awesome artists will be hanging out in Artist Alley.

I have a baby girl due in July, which means I won't be able to hit any summer shows... so the timing of WWA is pretty good.

The last show I went to was Wizard World Texas the year before they canceled it. It wasn't amazing, but it wasn't bad either. I got a pretty awesome color sketch from Liefeld (yeah, yeah, a lot of people hate him) of Captain America for free (don't worry, he didn't have D cups). I got a sweet sketch of Lando Calrissian from Tom Hodges - who is hilarious, btw. There wasn't anyone from the entertainment industry there I cared about (in fact, friggun Laura Vanderwhatever cut in front of me to ride the mechanical bull... jerk).

Mostly, I'm in it for some cool, cheap sketches and as many fairly priced maquettes/busts/statues and graphic novels as I can lay my hands on. Plus, I just love the convention experience.

Anywho... I know there are several Texans running amok in these forums and at least one other Oklahoman. Anyone planning on attending?

If I'm still living in Texas, I'll be going.

Yeah...no. I made a decision last year that Gareb Shamus wasn't getting another dollar of my convention money since he basically thumbed his nose at Texas until he acquired the Austin show, a move which, since it's occurring during the school year, ensures that families from Oklahoma, Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas, and Colorado are less likely to come. I guess that's why he ramps up the girls in skimpy outfits.

I hope you have a good time, and we'll all expect pictures when you get home. tongue But, I'm of the mind that I'd rather give money to Dallas Comic-Con, who have actual guests that geeks care about over people that the convention owners think are cool. Gareb gets enough of our money for his six dollar comic/pop-culture pamphlet every month.

I'll agree that the Dallas Comic Con is a greater show and gets more of my monies but I'm a convention whore.

I've been looking at Dallas Comic Con as well. I've heard a lot of good things about it. Do a lot of retailers go to that one. I guess the bi-annual nature of it somehow makes it seem less glamorous.

Obviously, they're both still a long way away. It will probably be some obscure Star Wars guest that sways me one way or the other in the end. (Last time I met Dermot Crowley... nice guy). I just hate waiting.

I may go, it just depends on what's going on in my life at the time. November is really far away, a lot could happen between now and then.

If you're looking for retailers, then the Wizard show may be a better bet. The Dallas show is better for meeting celebrities and artists, a lot of them local. They do get vendors in there, but not as many as you'd find on the Wizard floor.

I wish Zeus Comics was still doing CAPE! on Free Comic Book Day. That was a great local show that attracted a surprising number of big name talent. (The last year they had it, Mark Waid and Gail Simone were there...you could walk right up to 'em and poke 'em and everything!) Hopefully, the economy will turn around enough to allow them to pick it up again at some later date.

I don't see CAPE happening again for awhile, which is a shame, because it was such a great local event. They are doing a going away party for Scott Kurtz on FCBD, but I don't know if that means Richard is going to do anything extra than he did for last year's FCBD.

They just announced Billy Dee Williams for Austin. That sealed the deal for me. I got an awesome Lando sketch from Tom Hodges at my last convention outing. Autographed 8x10, here I come!

I'll be at the Austin con, along with at least 3 other artists (Chris Fulton, Chris Summers, and Kennon James; all local guys). Me and Fulton pretty much make all the Texas shows that we can, including the one in Dallas. Smile

The two shows are run by different people. Austin Comic Con is run by Wizard.
