I dug #38, but this arc isn't thrilling me yet. I do have faith in Gail though, so I'm not going anywhere.

Its official, Wonder Woman is getting renumbered to #600! thumbs up
http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2009/12/08/can-you-say-wonder-woman-600/

Its set for June 2010. I had heard that she was approaching 600 so I figured DC would probably renumber her series. She's one of DC's icons so it makes total sense.

#39 was a good wrap-up to the Warkiller arc. Ares' kids are creepy. And who wouldn't love Swiftmaw?

WW #39

What is there to say? It's Gail Simone writing Wonder Woman. She's taken Princess Diana to hell and back, from Genocide to a Warkiller monster posing as her father. Or is it? It's not all quite clear with a lot of the syrupy dialogue from Zeus and even Diana herself. Thankfully there's tons of great art and gutty action to keep us interested, even when you know incidents will quickly be retconned within the issue.

Achilles, Jason, and Artemis all make the important decision, leading to some strange sci-fi flashbacks involving Zeus, and the official death of a much-hated figure. It's slightly predictable, slightly confusing, and maybe even slightly abrupt. But in all, it's a highly satisfactory ending to what looks to be a sure-break for Diana. And lord knows, she needs it.

Now, after seeing the debut issue of Blackest Night: Wonder Woman, what do you think of the look? While "if it ain't broke don't fix it" could certainly apply to what has been a steady run of goodness from Simone, Lopresti and Ryan, I can't help but think that this series is treading serious water. I know I'm an advocate for it's quality; but is anyone else?

Sometimes change can be good.

3.5/5 Unworthy Parcels - Another fine finish to another solid arc. But this series is in need of an overhaul. Even after writing all positive reviews, it still bothers me that Wonder Woman is not being recognized. So, let's do it.

#40 was real good. Etta was wonderful. Hopefully Quetzlotl will show up again; he was fun. Really looking forward to next issue's WW/Power Girl throw-down.

WW #40

Solid issue, but a little hard to take these new enemies seriously (sorry). As for the Etta/Checkmate stuff? Yes! We need more Checkmate in our life (this is all especially invigorating in Wonder Woman considering what she did during Infinite Crisis. And yes, the next issue battle will improve on this set-up.

3/5 B&B - Good.

#40 was pretty good. I think the art was much better than it had been. I liked Aaron Lopresti's art but I had a problem with his faces, especially WW's. It was too long. In this issue she looked much better.

I know nothing about Etta, so that didn't do much for me.

The only real complaint I have it the coming WW/PG fight. Heroes fighting heroes has been done to death.

It's definitely entertaining in a light-hearted way, but don't expect any groundbreaking moments.

If you guys don't mind, I have a few questions for you: Overall, how has Gail's run on Wonder Woman been, I've been hearing mixed opinions. And what are the best arcs to pick up, Gail's run and Wonder Woman in general.

I think it's been pretty solid since "The Circle", if I'm remembering the name correctly.

Wonder Woman #41

In a week in which I purchased 20-something titles, Wonder Woman is the victor. How the hell did that happen? For one, Gail Simone pens her best issue yet. Her run on Wonder Woman has been solid, if ever so undulated in quality. Simone’s first take on Diana, The Circle, was a nicely contained 3-issue arc that expanded into a larger story; her attempt to make Rise of the Olympian an epic felt more like an eternity, haggling through seven issues of random Zeus prophecies, Tigra's comeuppance and the unfortunate awkwardness of the stalking Ninja Turtle-inspired Genocide.

I wasn't sure where this issue was going, either, as the opening depicts Achilles attaining himself a pretty piece of real estate. This little scene actually sets the table for the issue's keen sense of humor. There's no question in my mind that Gail Simone is one of comic's most underrated writers, considering this title garners little attention month-to-month. Hell, even yours truly made the questionable decision in "trade-waiting" Secret Six.

Much of "A Murder of Crows, Part Two" is an elongated throwdown between Power Girl and Wonder Woman. Simone nails every bit of each superheroine's humbling narration, while artist Aaron Lopresti delivers his best work yet. His action panels nail all the angles, elucidating enough of the haymaker-launching and bus-tossing for the viewer to enjoy while often chuckling at much of the self-preservation Karen and Diana offer during their brawl. The reason for this rooftop confrontation is thankfully gratifying, and the conclusion never stoops down to typical cheeseball territory. Those little boyscout demons I couldn't stand last month actually go on to make frightening antagonists.

There's no doubt in my mind that this has been the most enjoyable Wonder Woman issue since the beginning of Simone's run, if ever. It's actually quite a lengthy read despite half of the issue dedicated to an epic brawl between Karen and Diana. While that main event was indeed pleasing, Simone and company are doing an even better job pushing smaller arcs towards the bigger picture.

4.5/5 Bags&Boards - Fantastic

Lopresti didn't draw this issue, despite what it says on the cover.

Definitely a good ish. Honestly, I think Diana is probably the toughest person to beat in a fight. I know she's been depicted inconsistently at times, but I think stories like "Sacrifice" really did a good job at showing that if it came down to it, she could beat Superman.

I'm assuming Morrison takes over as rumored...

glad to see Simone back on Birds of Prey though, that was a hell of a run.

Wow, now that's a bit harsh. LOL. It's a man's world, there aren't a lot of female books that have good sales. Gotham City Sirens is one of the rare titles doing good and it's mostly surviving off the Batman Reborn status quo for now...the Wonder Woman title NEVER has the advantage of being pushed over through "events" and "crossovers" like the Green Lantern and Batman titles. I'm sure "Blackest Night: Wonder Woman" did pretty good. Let's hope the next run of WW gets involved throughout the entire DC universe instead of being so sheltered in its own corner...

I'm not really into WW, I like her but not enough to get a monthly. If Morrison starts writing WW, I'd just trade wait it if reviews catch my interest.

I think they need to move away from the constant 'Who am I?' stories and just have her start kicking some ass. There are SOOO many possibilities to touch on, and Gail has to some extent, with her mythical background. So much mythology to tap into. But every writer that comes on always tries to put their own touch on who Wonder Woman is, and it takes away from other potential stories. WE KNOW WHO SHE IS, MOVE ON! Laughing
