Thor #611

I wouldn't mind if Keiron Gillen stayed on longer. This book has all the goods of Asgardian lore, right down from the descriptive mugs of anguish in hell towards the goulish Disir that strike any mongols within their path. The language is near-perfect to JMS' run; yet while Thor still takes the backseat, the imploding presence of Balder and Tir show Gillen knows how's to keep his family just as interesting.

There's odes to Loki and all who've fallen, as even this scenes require a quiet disonnance. I'm really feeling Elson's improved artwork. Gone are the paints that contrasted too heavily with Tan's more Marvelesque pencils. Now, Elson's magic has determined a creepy hell. As Balder and the gang strike further through Mephisto's kingdom it should only get more intriguing as to how awful this place shall look.

4/5 - Sure, not a lot happens, other than Hela's new status quo, as the comic even backtracks a bit to the last arc. But I was completely entertained and Elson's art looks downright great.

Well I think this story arc has been a bit of a dud and I doubt Gillen is entirely responsible. Obviously there's been delays with the new team coming on board and this arc just feels hastily put together and thought out as a result. I'd be surprised if Gillen had to come up with it pretty quickly.

You've got to think with the efforts Gillen has put in on Thor over the last 12 months he's a real Marvel team man and it would be good to see him rewarded with his own book.

Oops #614 was the finale, and it was very good. Thor's battle with the Disir may not have lasted long, but his turning with Mephisto may last an eternity. Deals are swung, Loki's eternal mischief surrounds every objective, and a "return to glory" for Asgard is imperative.

Keiron Gillen did a most admirable, albeit excellent job picking up where JMS left off and hardly missed a step. He may have lacked the press of the previous big name auteur, but along with SWORD and other contributions, Gillen seems to be making waves. I believe his next project is Generation Hope, and it'd be nice to see him reach higher fame than he already has.

3.5/5

^Gotta still read Gillen's Hell arc. Did you hear he'll be co-writing Uncanny with Frac?

Meanwhile...Fraction takes the reigns next week! Can't wait! Very Happy

Gillen co-writing Uncanny? That's great news. Now if only he can be the sole writer...

Fraction's history with Thor (well, one character titles in fact) has been stellar, so I'm sure he'll do just fine. He better.

Thor #615

This was a damn near perfect debut by Fraction and Pasqual Ferry. I loved the concepts Frac laid down, and the use of the quirky quantum physicist to explain them. Frac seems to want to bring back the Kirby-esque sci-fi/fantasy elements to Thor and I'm all for it. Not that I didn't love JMS's more Shakespearean/fantasy-leaning take on the mythos (or Gillen's run), but the Marvel Thor mythos was always meant to have a good bit of sci-fi elements in it.

The beings about the "fill the void" in Asgard are downright scary. Their debut was crazy. Then I loved Thor's characterization here. He used a little tough love on Balder to try and get him out his rut, and he showed his softer side while reminiscing about his younger days with Loki. Plus, Fraction did a great job of subtly tying in the ramifications of Siege. Also some gorgeous vibrant art by Ferry. Very strong debut that set up some very interesting themes and concepts.

Other than the overly talky panels with the scientist, I'm in upmost agreement that this was a nearly perfect debut. To me its not really shocking considering how well Frac's written Thor in the past. And the art while cartoony was bright & gorgeous for the most part. Def 4.5/5!![/b]

You can tell Fraction is building a long-term epic here in this book, much like he did with Invincible Iron Man. He's mixing some nice high-concept sci-fi/fantasy elements with some good ole humor and character drama. This threat to the realm of Asgard looks damn serious. But it seems Fraction's overarching theme on this run will be about Thor's ever-hopeless desire to redeem his once beloved brother Loki. I love the way he's approaching it so far.

Good review brother, I have yet to "unenjoy" Fraction's solo heroe work...this cosmologist (not hair and make-up expert, loons) is a pretty interesting character, as well. Balder's speech was pretty heartfelt, to boot.

Thor #618 merely illustrates why Matt Hollingsworth is the best colorist in comics today... Okay, so Laura Martin is perhaps the best known, but you can't tell me this isn't top tier work! Akin to his run on Iron Man, Fraction's plot on Thor is another slow-kill, yet one filled with a flurry of splendid commentary about the Otherworlds, the seemingly forever atospheric presence of Odin, and the morseful regathering of Ragnarok post-Siege. After stumbling a tad with with the minature-Loki bits, I'm glad to see this title back on top, even when, nothing galaxy-shattering "happens".

Thor is "Mighty" once again!

"The Mighty Thor" relaunches in April with Matt Fraction writing and Oliver Coipel back illustrating. While the current "Thor" series will revert back to its original name "Journey into Mystery" written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Doug Braithwaite.

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=30376

The current "Thor" series is in the midst of Fraction's first storyline, "The World Eaters" with artist Pasqual Ferry, and the writer noted that its conclusion will springboard directly into "Mighty's" first arc called "The Galactus Seed." "Galactus comes to eat Asgard because there’s something incredible that Thor has harvested out of the World Tree," he said, promsing “Asgard vs Galactus" and "Thor vs The Silver Surfer" as part of the plot.

More top-notch stuff from Frac, Ferry, and colorist Hollingsworth. Odin is back! And he's pissed. It's great to see the All-Father back and asserting his authority. Secrets about Asgard's past and the World Tree are being revealed and its not looking good. While Balder and Tyr hit the front lines...this arc just keeps getting better and better.

It's a win-win situation, even if it means one more monthly book.
