The Marvel one was only 1/4 of my freebies, I tried the indies and I really liked The Tick out of Irredeemable and Mouse Guard.Tomer Soiker wrote:I'm also disappointed, that people picked up the Marvel and DC stuff instead of the lesser known books.

It would ultimately cost us less than the free comics, and 90% of the dollars would instantly be reinvested into the store.
Plus, imagine the PR and good will produced by a store that gives away legal tender.
Interesting idea, no?

Come on People (who own comic shops)! The hard part is getting people in the door and FCBD does that for you! Make a friggun sale! Do something to make people want to spend money. If we're not buying stuff on the busiest day of the year, your doing something wrong!
Joshua wrote:I don't really understand the mentality of expecting shops to run sales on FCBD. Maybe it's just because so many shops do people have come to expect it, much like free refills at a restaurant, but if anything that's the one day of the year when comic shops shouldn't be offering up large discounts. They are, after all, giving away free comics by the bulk. Sure, those books don't cost as much as the regular, weekly fare, but they still cost money for the stores and they aren't receiving any profit in return for them.
Like Demonweasel said, if price is your main motivation, then Amazon will always beat out your LCS. Personally, I support my comic book shop when they are and aren't having sales because I enjoy the experience. I always try to buy something on FCBD, at regular price, because that's what keeps stores running. Sales, while good on the consumer in the short term, should be a very rare thing.
Yeah, we'd have a filter, there. Plus, why would people get you the dollar when it could be theirs?LOOSECANNON wrote:What if I keep sending people in and out of the store to gather dollars...and by closing come up with a thousand dollars..?
Free Comics do cost money for the stores, as you know. Plus, by having them pre-bagged, a store would probably save money and man-hours when it comes to people coming up and grabbing them. We had them on display with numbers, people wrote down which ones they wanted, we gave them to them. If we had them all out, people would have literally "stolen" stacks of free comics (yeah, it's a city, these things happen).Demonweasel wrote:I hate shops that have a limit on how many books you have, or just have them in a bag in as if hey are trying to funnel you out as quick as possible. Make it an event. Make people happy to be there and make them feel like they really got something. If someone goes "All I was able to get was this..." then they're probably disappointed and not going to come back. We allow one per title as long as supplies last. We had 28 of the titles available arrayed on a table for folks to pick and choose.
FCBD was our biggest day ever, actually. You have an incredible amount of foot traffic, so a sale in some form or another is a good idea. It's like the Black Friday of the comics industry.Joshua wrote:I don't really understand the mentality of expecting shops to run sales on FCBD.

Most wouldn't bother to make the trip from afar, but it'd be the same as a family coming in, demanding free stuff, hanging out demanding free sketches, not buying anything, blocking up a table, then leaving...Mnemosis wrote:FINALLY... http://panelsonpages.com/?p=22625Heytherejeffro wrote:We were actually talking about a different type of promotion at the store I work at called "Free Money Day", wherein every person who walks into the store is given a dollar bill. My concern for you guys would be how widely you publicize this, and how many people would just come in, take a dollar, and leave.
He had too many spikes, too!Mnemosis wrote:That's true.
