Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking

I've been meaning to watch that. Read a brief article about him saying how it'd be illogical not to consider another world with life. Not necessarily green men or intelligent like us. But if there was, he said to leave them be, because if they are like us, they'd want to invade and take our resources. Creepy. Heh.

He suggests that aliens might simply raid Earth for its resources and then move on: "We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet. I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach."

He concludes that trying to make contact with alien races is "a little too risky". He said: "If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn't turn out very well for the Native Americans."

Psh, I'd already be bowing with obedience while everyone else is still dumbfounded.

Hawking's theories on time travel in this special are VERY interesting. While he essentially ruled out the idea of time travel to the past, due to the possibility of paradoxes, he does believe in the possibility of time travel to the future. He talks about humans creating ships that can travel at speeds just shy of the speed of light, this would cause time inside the ship to literally move slower. For example, 5 years in the ship would be about 10 years real time...so in effect people in the ship would travel to the future!

Another theory was based on the fact that objects with great mass cause time around them to move slower. So circling something with immense mass like a super black hole in some sort of spaceship would slow down time for those inside, similar to the previous near light-speed example.

Obviously, these are all theoretical since we aren't even close to being able to build these kinds of ships, but the possibilities are still interesting to ponder.
