Is this thing on?

I'm finally going to do something I've been talking about for a long time. I'm going to go to an open mic amateur night at a stand up comedy club. Oh man I'm excited! And nervous. I've got a nice little five minute set, that I've been writing and tweaking for at least a month. I'll let everyone know how it goes, it's on August 11th

I think I'm funny. I essentially perform every week on the PoP!-Cast and I think I did pretty damn well at both our C2E2 panels. That said, I don't know if I've got it in me to do an open mic. Good form, T-Matts. Good luck, man. Hope you knock 'em dead.

I hope this leads to more stand up (The "winner" is determined by auudience applause, and offered a small paying gig, is what someone has told me) and if it does, I'll totally tape a set one night and post it here.

I think I'm funny too, but most people I know mostly don't get my cynicism. Don't think I'll fit well in front of a crowd (past experiences* prove that), so more kudos to you, Matt.


* Last time I remember talking to a crowd was in a memorial service at seventh grade for a classmate. I couldn't even look at the videotape of the ceremony out of embarrassment.

Good luck! Alot of people are funny but it takes a special talent to be funny and good at stand up!

Being funny and being good at stand-up comedy are definitely not the same thing. I'm hilarious, but I could never do stand-up. I've got a buddy that's been doing it for a year or more now and he says it's a pretty rough world.

I agree. Being funny and doing stand-up are not necessarily the same.Funny on the spot vs. building jokes. I know damn well I couldn't do stand up but here fairly often that I'm funny. Funny and modest.

i'm hilarious after about 3 long island iced teas....not even build up funny just i'll embrace the inner richard pryor....but i'm trying to drink less so i'm neutering my own dog. either way, good luck mr. matthew, i hope you make them piss themselves...with laughter, not out of fear like you do normally.

Good Luck!! It takes huge conjones to get up in front of a bunch of people and HAVE to be funny. Well wishes to you. Keep us posted.

Post some of your set. Not the specific jokes (unless you want to), just some of the subjects that you'll be playing off of. Are you going enthusiastic caricature of self, dead-pan, alt. character, observational...?

my style is pretty straight forward me, but the me who always has to feel like he's the entertainment. I'll drop what I would consider the titles of the jokes I plan on using in my short no more than five minute set:

New to this
Aunt Jemima
bathroom reading
historic facebook
Sex robot
Bill's back

that will probabaly end up being too long, so the first to go is Bathroom reading, and then historic facebook. Prolly just bathroom reading tho.

That was so vague...yet you have know idea how intrigued. I must here this. Love stand-up. Even if it goes badly, you have to ell us how it went. :P

I'm told by almost everyone I know that I should be a stand up comic. I'm very funny (sadly my humor doesn't translate to message boards, and that bugs the hell out of me), but my humor is very on the spot. I'm great with a funny comment in the moment. I don't know if I could do stand up though. Thinking of funny things in advance is hard. If I based my stand up on just talking to the audience I may be able to do it.
